45 BBB Carbine Update

Got the taller front sight (Lyman Globe) installed to synch up with the Skinner Express Peep. Shot three different loads at three different distances with two different Shaver inserts (nothing like multiple variables, huh?) and settled in at 50 yds, indoors, seated, bagged, shooting 250 gr MBC Hy-Teks/9.0 Gr of Unique (probably hotter than I need, based on RifleTom's input).

Anyway, I gotta get out of this indoor range before I can do much more with this. I ended up with a fairly large post insert on the front globe sight, which I knew I'd never pick up at 50 yds on a black target with a tiny bullseye, so I enhanced that area with a bunch of extra red "stickies" I had with me. Still couldn't really see the top of the post insert under these lighting conditions.

Until I can get outside and play with this under natural light, at longer distances, with more like 8.0 gr of Unique and some different insert experimentation, this is probably as good as it gets.

It's not awful for my first time with any iron sights in quite a while (last week notwithstanding), and 1.5"-2" high at 50 yds is probably about right on at 100 yds, but we'll see, won't we?

Your POIs are quite good, ESquared, considering that indoor lighting at FJ is about at dusk or dawn level! I would be happy with your target. I just wonder why FJ doesn't provide better/brighter lighting on their ranges....

Anyway, I have no doubt you'll get where you want to be with your Henry .45 Colt.

Like you are planning, I'm definitely going to do my final sight-in tweaking for the MAW outdoors. Considered going to an MDC range today since our weather was mild. But the wind gusts were again pretty strong, and not the best conditions to hone in the sight system. Spring is coming....'twill be welcome!

Does the Lyman globe have a shroud all the way around it? I seem to have trouble getting enough light around the front bead when there is a full shroud around it.
I would stick with the 9 gr. of Unique with the .45 Colt as that is a great all around load and helps seal the case to the chamber...less black soot on your brass.
I use that load in my Ruger revolvers for plinking or most anything else.

Yep, it's a "hood" (see pic), which is making the low-light, indoor range a challenge.
Thanks for the counsel on Unique. I've worked up both 8,0 and 9,0 (in limited quantities) and haven't been able to tell the difference, but this whole rifle exercise has kind of overshadowed (shrouded?) that aspect of this round of loading/shooting.

Off to a good start, there, ES. Wouldn't get too concerned, since there's only so much you can do with iron sights in poor lighting and indoor lighting is consistently mediocre in most places I've seen that offer shooting.

If that front sight is disappearing in that bull, might try a six o'clock if you've been using a dead on hold. That's the idea behind a six o'clock.

Also, hoods on front sights are controversial for some folks. A lot of folks hate them and ditch them, ASAP, when they get a new gun. On a globe sight, of course, not an option. Remember, though, that a hood actually serves a shooting function by making the lighting more consistent in the way light strikes that front sight. Light at a low angle, either from the right or the left, can actually cause windage shifts to the POI for a shooter, since the front sight is not evenly illuminated. Not a big deal for hunting, but it can be an issue when target shooting.
