Some 5 shot "keeper" groups, today.

I normally shoot 10 shot groups for the sake of training, practice and, of course, for the challenge. When I do make it to 5 shots with a "keeper" group, I'll typically save the group and add it to my notes. Today, I managed some of those 5 shot keeper groups and thought I would share a few with you. It's no coincidence that nearly all my personal best keeper groups have been shot with Contender pistols and/or carbines and rifles, so, yeah, here she goes, again, with those goofy Contenders.

Recently picked up this old octagon barrel in 22 LR, then added a period correct 1.3x TC rail mount scope. People weren't using red dots much, back then; they were using these essentially no magnification scopes, instead. I enjoy using these scopes because they do give me a more precise aiming point than a red dot and, because, well, it's part of Contender history, same as the octagon barrels.


And the keeper it shot for me.


The star of the show, today, though, was our Contender carbine with it's 16+" stainless 22 Hornet barrel, shooting factory Hornady 22 Hornet V max. It wears the excellent Nikon Prostaff 3-9x EFR Target scope. Shooting, on this one, was 50 yards. Hope to get out to 100 yards with it, soon.

One last note to share. The 22 Hornet is one of the very best Contender chamberings, ever. Really helps when trying to shoot keeper groups. Hope you get a chance to get out and shoot some of your own keeper groups, soon. Thanks for letting me share.

Les, I'm not sure if the Contender is even legal, over there, because of its pistol-rifle convertible nature. Even in this country, that convertible status has been taken to court and challenged, but it survived the court case. The Contender began life as a handgun, though, and made it's mark on the shooting world as a handgun. The carbine versions came a little later, but, even to this day, are nowhere near as popular as the handgun versions. Most Contender shooters are handgun shooters, who may or may not add a carbine to the mix.

I do love the carbines, though. The stock design on the carbines allows me to tuck in very tight when shooting them, offhand. That and the true match grade triggers that can be had with the original Contenders makes them a natural for my offhand work, whether as a handgun or a carbine. Probably comes as no surprise to those of you who know me when I say that I shoot these Contenders more than any other kind of cartridge gun.
