Range Report1_BBB and Me

Post by PT7 » Wed Apr 13, 2016 11:53 pm

As I mentioned at morning coffee, I got out to the range today with my H006M. This is my first Range Report on this Forum with the Big Boy.

I don't have a lot of paper target pictures because I did most of my shooting at steel targets. Only posting one paper target, picture of the 100-yard range, and one new photo of my Henry rifle. Let's see if I can get this day together. Please join me....it was a very good time! :D

The Outdoors
Weather was very nice with temp ranging from upper 60s to low 70s, blue sky and sunny, with just a little bit of pesky wind blowing from my right to left across the range. Pesky, but not like the ferocious winds of the last couple of weeks.

The Range

I'm standing behind the shooting tables checking out my targets. I shot at the white silhouette and the black rectangle target just to the left of the silhouette. These are set at 100 yards. There are 7 more black targets to the left of these two, and I shot them at 25 yards & 50 yards.

Here is a brief written range tour.
Immediately to the right of these shooting tables is a .22 caliber range. It is 25-40 yards in length with four steel rectangle targets. These targets won't handle larger centerfire ammo.

Looking again out from the shooting table to my targets, walk downhill and stop at about 50 yards. Look to your left. There is located at 200 yards the shooting shack at front of a 400-yard long-distance range. It has steel targets place at 200, 300, 400. So crossing mid-way at the 100-yard range I was on this third range. Interesting set up. Of course, whenever a large number of folk are out here, the RO makes darn sure of the bullet traffic!! ;)

The Ammo

I used a .38 Special + "P" load with .357 brass. My friend has been doing these reloads for me. I hope when I get started reloading to continue using this recipe. It shoots well in both my H006M and Ruger SP101 .357 magnum revolver. I shot 80 rounds today.

The Target

After the 100-yard shots at mid-section on the silhouette (no picture), I moved closer in to 25-yards and aimed at the silhouette head, shooting off hand. My hits totaled 15/15, but windage was to the left.....exactly the wind direction. Probably some wind effect, but I'm sure the shooter participated in these left-side POIs, too.

The Henry
I've bought this Henry .357 Bronze Big Boy (H006M) in 2013. It's been a while since I've added pictures of this rifle to my files. So I photographed my rifle for the first time this year. I took three pics, and liked this one the best.

The final shots.
My friend lent me a shotgun to "play with" this afternoon. It was a Harrington & Richardson slug gun in 20-gauge caliber with a Tasco Red Dot sight mounted. The wood stock was beautiful, and the gun was very, very heavy due to the thick slug barrel. I'd guess it was at least 9 to 9-1/2 pounds, maybe even more. But it really was a blast to shoot. I also sent some slugs down the long-distance range and tried for the first steel target at 200 yards. Came close, but no metal clang echoed back my way. Maybe next time.

My day away of play was very okay! I look forward to next time.
Hope your day was good, and also that you enjoyed my range report a little, too.

Excellent write up you have a way with words. Sounds like a very nice range. Good shooting fresh air and sunshine. Can't ask for much more than that. Thanks for taking us along for the ride.

Great report PT7. I especially liked the down load of the cartridges. From all I have heard about shooting the 38 in our 357 firearms, it makes a lot of sense to use the 357 brass with a lighter load. Will be looking into following your lead (pun intended) on this.
Remember, it's not how many guns you have. It's how many bullets you have.

firing a 20 ga slug at a 200 yard target, now that would be fun .. .. I can see myself going through a bunch of shells doing that .. :D

Yes, JEBar, shooting that slug gun was very much fun. My friend gave me a couple of boxes of shells, and even though he had a lot more, I was content. Although like you said, more ammo would have made a merrier time of it. :*)

I've shot slugs before out of a smooth bore 12-ga s/g. But this H&R slug gun is really something else. When a s/g has the dedicated barrel configuration for shooting slugs, it is much more accurate. That's what surprised me when I just missed that target way out there at 200 yards! If I would have hit it, I might just have fallen over!! I think when I plan another visit to his range, I'll get some 20-ga slugs of my own and really shoot 'em up! :D

Thanks for your first class range report. I also thank you for "bringing" us with you. It was nice to come along. Your range sounds like the range officer has his work cut out for him.

That was a great review. Can't wait for the next one.
