Not all of our single shots are high dollar rifles, but I promise you, they are all accurate. This Winchester 67A is a fine example. This one was made sometime after WWII, but it's still old enough to have been made in that old Winchester tradition of walnut and steel, built to last several lifetimes.


Picked this one up at a gunshow, recently, for a very reasonable $200. Condition is excellent, stock has some nice figure and, best of all, a previous owner had added a Lyman 55 peep sight. Given that the trigger is excellent, I suspect a previous owner put this Winchester 67A to use as a budget target rifle, as a lot of shooters often did, back in the day, who couldn't afford the high dollar Winchester 52 target 22 rifle.


Notice, too, that the 67 was a traditional thumb cocker. Working the bolt only loads and ejects the shell. To cock the gun, you have to pull back on that thumb knob at the rear of the bolt. Doesn't get any simpler than that.

The old bead front sight had to go, however. Easy fix. Ordered a Lyman globe front sight for $40 and that turned the 67 into a very respectable shooter.


How good a shooter? Shot one of my best offhand groups of the summer with this peep/globe equipped 67.


As always, Bill and I have a little competition going on most range trips with him shooting off a rest and me taking a turn with the same rifle, but with the handicap of shooting offhand. He usually wins, but I figured I had him beat this time. Not so. Close, but his group is smaller. I want a match, though.


After shooting our classic, but very affordable, Winchester 67A single shot 22, though, we both were grinning, ear to ear. That makes the gun a real winner in our book.

Your shooting, along with Bill's, is always most impressive....you two would make an excellent shooting team, when not competing. Those .22 POIs are impressive once again, both from the rifle rest and off hand!! BTW, if you two do decide to ever hold that match, I think the Henry Forum folk would really be interested and closely watch the competition.

Nothing new for me....I really like the wood on that Winchester 67A. As I've followed your posts with all the sharp-looking, older .22 rifles you find/acquire, I was motivated yesterday to look through the "gun library" at the nearby KS Cabelas store. I should have written down the make/model number of some of the older .22s I looked at. There was one cool Remington that had some fine-looking wood, and a very heavy steel barrel. I was surprised at the weight of that .22 rifle! Was kind of impressed with the number of older rifles they had in stock, and most in pretty good condition. When I next visit that library, I think I'll jot down some info on the rifles I see. Might have some Qs to post then.

I think you're right, NCG. Those rifles would "last several lifetimes" coming out of that now-by-gone build tradition.

PT, yes, that generation of guns featured different manufacturing techniques, but with Winchester, especially, it nearly drove the company to extinction. Doesn't make them necessarily better than new guns, but knowing this adds to the attraction for me. It's one of the reasons I like CZ rimfires so much. I see a lot of that tradition in the brand.

By all means, ask away on the older stuff.

I'm really liking these old single shot rimfires. I have an old 53-B Springfield made by Stevens and it is always a pleasure to shoot. Bench shooting Norma ammo I was able to get close to a CZ.

NCG... your post certainly got my attention this morning. I always enjoy reading your posts and checking out your targets with envy. What grabbed my attention was the picture of the little single shot. Many years ago, while working Patrol, I stopped in a small gun shop in my area and chatting with the owner spotted a little single shot and worked a deal for the jewel as a rifle for my three girls. (Oddly, my son really wasn't too interested in shooting, he could take it or leave it.)

I picked up the rifle for $20; what he had allowed the previous owner in trade toward a new semi-auto 22 Marlin. I went and pulled the rifle out of the long gun safe to check, and although they look just the same, MINE is a Winchester model 60... must be a good deal older. Still has a nice stock and the same pull to cock tab on the back of the bolt. The girls all loved shooting it and they could all hit spent shotgun hulls at 25 yards.
We were going to drive out to Oklahoma this month and one of the things we were taking to the middle daughter, was THIS rifle to pass on to the Granddaughter, now a pre-teen, and ready to learn to shoot as well. Would have been perfect for her. Unfortunately, I am not up to the drive right now, and the wife will fly out. The truck load of goodies will wait. Perhaps in the spring.

It was the best $20 I ever spent. I have fond memories of the hours spent on the range with the three girls, and I'm sure when my daughter and son-in-law get this rifle in OK, they will build hours of memories with my granddaughter doing the same. Quality lasts lifetimes.

Not only am I jealous because I cant shoot that good. It seems like eveytime I fire up my computer and come to this site NCG is shooting again. Thats just not fair. I need more shooting time.
