What a great day. Enjoyed a real nice ride this morning in the hills, and went to the range this afternoon. 70F, with about a 40 mph wind. Typical southern Alberta summer day.
First up, some pics of the Oldman River Gun Club range. This is about 10 minutes form home. Most times like today, I have the whole range to myself.

Now for the shootin'!

My Colt Richards 1860 SA Conversion revolver in 45 Colt. 20 rounds of Remington 250 gr lead round nose. Perfect for the revolver but does not feed properly sometimes in the Henry. So I just use it for pistol work. This is 15 yds, standing and shooting 1 hand. The rear sight on the revolver is a notch in the hammer. 8" barrel. Not bad and yes I tried to put the one in the bottom right corner... ...so I'm fairly pleased with the results. I have not shot the pistol for a month or so. Don't know why cuz it is great fun to shoot. Next up the 1860 Henry at 25 yds. 12 rounds of Winchester 250 gr lead flat nose. Off hand standing with open sights. Dialed in today. Lastly, the 1860 Henry at 50 yds. Same ammo, Winchester. 38 rounds in the wind is always a challenge. All in all, I'm ok with the results, like Sir Henry said one time, the shots would put meat in the freezer. And the firearms of course

nicely done .... nicely done indeed .... I've fired revolvers with the rear sight notched into the hammer .... doing so requires a set of skills that I've never mastered

The 250 yd target board is taunting me every time I see it. One day soon. If I could even get on paper at that distance I'd frame the target.

well understood .... a 45 Colt (just like our 44 mag) simply isn't designed for 250 yard shooting .... in my mind the trajectory would be something like that of a mortar .... don't get me wrong, if I had a chance I'd sent some down range at that distance but my chance of coming close would be pretty slim

it certainly is .... the notch in the ones I've fired were cut in a sharp "V" .... for me, properly aligning the front sight was more a matter of chance .... at more than a few feet away, I never got the hang of it

The 1860 Colt army has a very small, sharply cut V. It's not easy to use but if you do manage to get lined up the revolver is deadly accurate.

Love that one hand shooting with the Colt. That is some fine shooting, indeed, and I know what it takes to get that done. Outstanding. That traditional V cut Colt sight setup is capable of great accuracy IF and WHEN you can see the sights.

Also, what beautiful scenery! I'd love to visit that range even if I never fired a shot.

Thanks! I'm working up my nerve to go to 25 yds with the revolver...

Interesting to see the 1-handed stance. I don't know what my stance is, because I have no idea what it is supposed to be so I don't think I do the same thing every time. I sort of turn sideways a bit and stare down my right arm and through the sights. I'm trying to stay consistent with my grip and use my little finger under the grip to steady and keep any sideways rolling action under control.

Those 1/2 mile shots across the canyon the Lone Ranger made with his pistol must have taken lots of practice....

I built and designed this gun to shoot unsupported [1 handed ] only , like my pic shows of my buddy's shooting in a match . In my world we call that unsupported . Supported is using 2 hands and not benched .



ONLY ALLOWED TO SHOOT UNSUPPORTED { 1 HAND } IN THESE PISTOL MATCH .

Very unique gun.
