Returned to the range with the tang peep 1885, this time for some offhand work.

Still getting to know the gun and its trigger (very important for offhand work), but we're becoming good friends. Try as I might, could not go 10 for 10 in the black 3" bull at 50 yards, but have a whole summer ahead of me and plenty of ammo, so I'm okay with these groups, for now. Yup, I could cheat and use a scope, but this 1885 will stay strictly iron, if for no other reason that I already have another 1885 22 LR with a scope. :)

Finished the session with a different kind of singles work, namely single action shooting. This time it was with the Cimarron 357 Frontier, shooting some standard 158 grain 38s.

This exercise, was all about cowgirl style drawing from the holster and shooting with one hand for each shot. I use only the front sight for this kind of work, emphasis on drawing smoothly, extending the gun, cocking it, then shooting once, sometimes twice, then repeating. I'm not exactly blazing fast, but I am getting better.

Most importantly, this draw and shoot with one hand is comfortable and very smooth for me with these Colt style guns. I don't have to break my grip to cock a Colt version six shooter. Even though a Ruger is close in style, the fit of any Ruger SA is wrong for me because I do have to break my grip a bit to get the hammer back when shooting one hand. Makes shooting a Ruger SA with one hand awkward and distinctly uncomfortable. Just that little bit of difference in proportions between a Colt version SA and a Ruger SA is a very big deal for me. Will be staying with Colt style guns from now on.

Nice work. Off hand standing rifle work is not easy as I well know. That's a real sweet revolver too, and as for the Cimarron target....drinks on the house just so I don't have to meet you at high noon in the street.

Excellent shooting as always, NCG! Image

Does the tang sight interfere with your rear hand hold at all, or does it fit comfortably behind the sight?

Thanks, guys.

Les, the tang sight does not get in the way of my hold at all. My hand is well behind it. Love the way it folks down when not in use, too.

Darn. That rifle is too beautiful. Revolver ain't bad, either.
