Okay, bolt guns are not what most people associate with cowboys and cowgirls, but, hey, bolt action rifles were very much a part of the late frontier period, back in Teddy Roosevelt's day and the days of Pancho Villa. That's my story, anyway, and I'm sticking to it.

As for us, we once had a fairly large collection of CZ rifles, but last year we trimmed the number back to the few we most liked to shoot. One of these is our 455 American in 22 LR. Scope is a Nikon Prostaff 3-9x EFR.


All CZs shoot well, but now and then you get one that happens to go beyond that into the outstanding accuracy department. This CZ is one of them. This is my best group on record with this particular gun, but average group size is usually double that, on the order of half inch.


Last week, we were headed to the range and decided to take a change of pace from our usual early frontier style guns and shoot some of our late frontier style guns. The CZ 455 American was one of them.

Breezy day, so not ideal for 100 yard work, but just wanted to shoot 100, anyway. From a rest, got several 5 shot groups in the inch to inch and a half range with a variety of ammo. Nothing spectacular, but still about what I expected from this gun, given the conditions.

As always, I prefer to shoot offhand. This 455 CZ's weight and balance, as well as the excellent trigger, makes for a great offhand shooter. The gun has a feel very similar to some of our smaller HW air rifles, so even though I hadn't shot the 455 in a long time, the gun felt very familiar. This was my best group of the day. For sure, a great trigger is a HUGE plus for shooting offhand at 9x. Will tweak the windage a bit, next time.

Excellent group, NCG. I'd be beyond quite happy with those 5 POIs on a 6" splash at 100 yards, especially off hand shooting.

I haven't shot 100 yards with my Henry SGC for a while now. Might try to shoot that distance next time out, but it's a little challenging with the rear iron Skinner peep and front bead sight. However, your range report and great target results do motivate me to try.....

PT, these days, I really do need a scope for 100 yard work, though I do occasionally shoot irons at that distance for old time's sake. I also much prefer using a scope, now, for offhand work (with red dots a close second), mostly as a result of all my practice shooting scoped airguns, offhand. These old eyes just tire very quickly, now, with irons.

NCG, I love my CZ's too. They offer great value for the money, and if our club guns. are anything to go by, they are pretty much indestructible.

I can't come anywhere near your shooting offhand. Matter of fact even my bench work isn't as good as you are off hand.

Couldn't agree more, Les, about the durability on the CZs. I've tweaked a trigger or two on ours, but these CZs really are great choices for those that want a gun that they can take right out of the box and start shooting. Based on what I see posted on a lot of different forums, they're similar to the Henrys in that respect. Yup, I am way overdue to go down that Henry road.
