Cowgirl Corner: some of my favorites, today

Our amazing February thaw is about to be replaced with some stormy winter weather, so we headed to the range. Today was all handguns, mostly a couple of my favorite single actions. Not as much shooting as we had planned, because a shooting pal showed up and we shot the breeze a bunch. Fine with us, because we enjoy visiting with our pals, too.

While Bill was shooting a couple of his S&Ws (I say "his" because I prefer single actions), I was shooting some of my favorite cowgirl guns.

First up, is one of my most consistent shooters. It's a Super Blackhawk 44 mag with a 5.5" barrel. Love the feel and balance of the gun and it's the only standard Super with a fluted cylinder, which I prefer.

Last time out with this gun, I had been shooting some 44 Specials in it for fun, so had to reset the sights for 44 mag at my usual 50 yards with this gun. Here's the sight in target which is as good as any to show what a fine shooter this 44 mag is.

Finished the day with my favorite Single Six, this rather rare version of a Bisley Single Six. It's rare because on about 1200 or so were made with fixed sights and, again, my preferred fluted cylinder. This one truly is a joy to shoot.

Like all my Single Sixes, this one seems to love CCI SVs. Kind of become a habit for me, now, to end a shooting session with some relaxing work with one of the 22s, especially after shooting the big stuff. With this Bisley Single Six, I always leave with a smile.

All in all, a very good day, but rain started to move in, so we cut it a bit shorter than we would have liked. What can I say? Even cowgirls don't like shooting in the rain. :)

NCG, what do you shoot in your .44? Handloads? Factory ammo? Both?

I use both reloads and factory ammo in the 44s, but probably too much factory ammo. I say that because 44 mag factory ammo is insanely expensive. Just that I have so little time to sit at the bench, anymore. Most of what you see, here, is with Mag tech 240s. Reasonably priced, at least for 44 mag ammo, but shoots very well in my revolvers. Also have a local who makes 44 mag ammo at very reasonable prices.

Al, this reloading issue or, more specifically, the lack of time to do it, is the main reason I avoid cartridges like the 41 mag that really MUST be reloaded. Next to impossible to find a box of 41 mag factory ammo in our area. 44 mag, though, I can even find at Walmart.

I understand the time and the reloading. I was just havin some fun with you about the 41. I spend a lot of the winter months reloading in the evening so I have some of the ammo to blast away with when the weather is nice. Its all personal preference and priority's. What one person chooses to do doesn't always float the other ones boat. But us 41 maggers out here are always trying to raise that interest. After all if the demand was higher there would be more ammo around. Al

Hey, Al, I'm getting a kick out of the 41 mag teasing. Not to worry. Keep it coming.

I really do like the 41 and have been tempted by it many times. Now, if I happened upon an Old Model Blackhawk in 41 or maybe a vintage Smith 57 or ... :)

Well... when you find it, I'm thinking it will definitely need a Henry carbine to keep it company!

https://www.ammograb.com/41-magnum/ Well I dont know what you pay for the 44 mag but check this place out they offer 41 mag at a pretty good deal and I would think that would lure you to that Henry Brass Carbine in 41 mag. They ship in March . Put the Mr on the load bench cause the boss of the place wants a 41. Everyone one around here knows if momma aint happy aint nobody happy.

Did I read that correctly? 50 "yards"

I am very impressed. Good job!
