Was wondering what could be better than my Ruger Birdshead New Vaquero in 45 Auto and there it was. Another birdshead New Vaquero, only this time in my favorite cartridge, the 44 mag. Well, git along little dogies.


Yup, one range trip and this shorty 44 mag and I are best pals. As expected, had to file down the front sight, just a bit to get standard 44 mag 240 grain JSPs up a bit, but that only took a few minutes. Here's my best group of the day, but managed quite a few almost as good.


Even decided to show off a bit and shoot one-handed with the last seven rounds of Mag-tech 44 mag ammo I had in the box.


Got a little silly and even tried some 50 yard work. I say silly because a birdshead fixed sight gun with a stubby barrel is out of its league for this distance, but, hey, I did hit something.


Decided to play cowgirl with some fast shooting at a more normal distance for such a gun, basically pulling down the gun and touching off the next shot as soon as the front sight settled home.


What can I say? A bit more than 100 rounds and I wanted to keep shooting, but Bill was getting cold and I was getting tired. Just one of those guns you want to keep loading and keep shooting. Guess that's as good as it gets in a review of a gun. Love this one. Cute, too.

Good shooting no doubt. But its another boring 44 mag thread. Bring some life to the party and get a 41.

Bugs, didn't have to take off much, maybe an eighth of an inch or a bit less. Trimming the front sight for the load you want is standard fare with Vaqueros.

BigAl52, I know how boring these 44 mags are, but finding a birdshead in a 41 mag is going to be tough. In the meantime, try to think of the 44 mag as a 41 mag that took its vitamins and grew up.

My jury is out on that style of grips. Sounds like they are comfortable to use, but I just don't think they are my cup of tea. As said before here by others, to each his/her own. Good shootin' though!

I'm looking at a 25-Yard Timed And Rapid Fire Pistol Target (B-8(P) RC and your rapid fire 16-yard target is quite respectable. Granted its for another 9-yards but you would have had mostly 10's with only a few 9's.

Gene, thanks. Not sure what practical real world application shooting that fast has, but it sure keeps the ammo folks in business.

Ranch, good way to describe it. For the sake of avoiding a divorce, though, I'd probably go with a little softer shooter than the 44 mag for a first date. The 44 mag in a shorty is, uh, ... an acquired taste.

Bird heads are nice makes me think of Doc Holiday and the movie Tombstone. But at some point in life class takes over and 41's are just classy. Al
