Flintlock returns...

Post by RanchRoper » Sat May 03, 2025 12:34 pm

Beautiful spring morning in the Rockies. Been awhile since I made a range report.

I rarely shoot paper anymore, ringing steel is much more fun. Did both today so I can actually post a target. :)

A couple of months ago I was having lots of misfires so I sent my lock to Cabin Creek Muzzleloading in PA and Brad Emig aka the lock doctor, rebuilt it and resurfaced the frizzen. I had worn it out. Sparks like a meteor shower now. Not to mention having it tuned by a professional.

Anyhow, shot this little target at 50 yds off hand to see where I'm hitting. Not in the middle but at least I am consistent. In fairness it was quite windy as usual.

50 yds off hand, 68 year old eyes, primitive fixed iron sights. Counting my blessings I am still able to hit where I'm aiming. The Mr. Magoo years can't be far off. :)

Shoot safe, RR

You might get old eyes, but you'll never lose that kind of skill. You have a gift.

Nice job Keith. Maybe someday I won’t need a passport to come to Alberta and we can shoot some steel

RR as usual you post some mighty fine targets. The average shooter would have a hard time duplicating that group at 25 yds. no less 50. Especially considering you're using that Ol' smoke pole.

I spent quite a bit of time dialing it in, filed on the front sight, experimented with powder charge, lead ball, patch and lube. Right now I am having good luck with .490 ball, .010 patch & 60 grains of Schutzen or Goex 3fg. Have recently tagged some 10" steel plates at 130 yds off hand. 50-75 yds seems to be the sweet spot.
That would be the zone for hunting anyway for a clean shot, unless you were sitting in the same place all day with crossed sticks hitting buffalo just standing there in a herd.
