Picked up a Marlin 1894 in 357 magnum, Fit and finish are excellent my initial impressions are good so it seems Ruger did well IMHO, had some reloads for my GP100 158 sierra/w296. first rounds at 25 yards perched against the oak tree had one flyer( bottom foto) Bumped the rear sight up one notch to adjust elevation..on the orange was free standing at 50 yards, my aging eyes need a peep sight. But I had fun at the backyard berm. I put some 38 SWC into the berm to see how they cycle had No issues , trigger has crisp break, action needs some break in but is solid and tight the shorter LOP fits my small stature well this one's a keeper.

They are some good lookin rifles, I've handled a couple back in the summer.
The triggers seemed to be pretty decent and thought they could only get better with some use.

Nice looking rifle! I have a Remlin version. And, I like it! If Ruger is all that and a bag of chips, I suspect that it is a fine rifle! Happy shooting!

I had been waiting for several months for one of these to come in when my LGS told me he had a comparable Henry inbound. I told him I'd take it, without even asking the price. As it was, it was about $100 less than the Ruglin would have been. The only problem I have with the Henry is the LOP and the rubber butt pad. The rubber is super aggressive, and catches my clothing every time. I'm thinking of getting an aftermarket hard rubber butt pad that's only about 1/8"-1/4" thick. That should take care of both problems. Recoil should not be a problem.

I agree the big ole butt pad on the 357 is completely unnecessary.
I have a Rossi in 357 and it has a steel butt plate.
You can shoot it til you can't stand up and it's never an issue.

I have had the Ruger Henry and the Smith in my hands. Ill take the Smith. The sights on the Smith are better than the other two by far

I received a text from my LGS this morning asking if I would want a Marlin 44 Mag. I told him "I'd love one. But my gun fund is broke." His response to that was "I am still looking for a 357. In the Marlin. You still want that one correct?" I reminded him that I had purchased the Henry from him instead.

What that tells me is that the .357 Marlins are still pretty hard to come by. Congratulations to all of you who were fortunate enough to acquire one.

If I replace the buttpad I'm debating on then also stripping the finish and sanding the texturing off and thinning the handguard a bit, then oiling it all with Watco Danish Oil in Golden Oak. It looks really good on a couple of other rifles I've applied it to.
