Got out of work early, so I grabbed my krag
And headed over to the club.
No sooner .get setup, and another shooter shows up. So I tell him to get his target. Posted and join me. Well he was very slow getting his stuff ready.
Then he just wanted to talk, and the Sun is going down. But I got enuff shots off , to site in my krag with my reloads. 180 gr. @ 2190 fps. I don't push them hard. This rifle was made in 1898. She has a few wars under her barrel.
Two of my last three shots were touching at
100 yds. But just a little low , and 1 click to the left.
I made the adj. And called it quits.

Made in 1898?

That rifle has some stories attached to it. The sights that have been seen looking down that barrel, some of which would be downright scary I'm sure.

Yup , the 30-40 krag. Replaced the 45-70 as the military 's service rifle and was the first military rifle commissioned to use smokeless powder.
It was a short time as our military rifle maybe 10 yrs or less. Because you had to load the magazine one round at a time.
And the mauser's were Useing chargers or stripper clips , reloading much faster. So the military came out. With the Springfield in 30-06

Yup. 1898 was the first year for the camo stocks. The 1897's came with black Hogue overmolded stocks.

Yup And the pistol grip and lazor sight.
Useing smokeless powder was a huge advantage..
No more big cloud of smoke out the barrel giveing away your location to the enemy snipers.

So you can take it back to the original?

No. The nincapoop that drilled an taped it , to mount the scope , totally ruined it as far as any collector is concerned.
That's why I had the military rap put on the stock
To keep the military look and gives all that servered our country a great tribute.
The way it came out , and the great history of the rifle. , means a lot to me. Being a vet.myself.

It could be put back in the correct stock .but no collector would buy it.

I collect WWI and WWII firearms and go to great lengths to make them original. Sometimes just replacing the correct screws. I won't buy a mil-surp that can not be taken back.

I have a 1939 M1 with the later gas plug and op-rod. Most people don't care but I do. The problem is the original op-rods are usually cracked, hence the replacement.

But beauty is in the eye of the beholder, if it looks great to you that is all that counts.

If your rifle gets to the point where the incorrect gas plug and op-rod are just worrying you way too much, I'd be happy to baby sit it for you.
