Rainge Report Henry 45/70

Post by Handloader » Wed Jan 24, 2024 4:51 pm

Nice day today so I took out he henry 45/70 with 400 gr HCGC loaded with 45 grains of IMR 4198. I started printing my own targets on card stock the red bull is 4" in diameter and the green is 6" in diameter. Not bad for 100 yards resting with skinner peeps.

Not bad, indeed. I'd say more like excellent as a minimum. I know what a challenge it is to shoot at 100 yards with iron sights. Nicely, done.

Don't know how you do it but that is some great shooting! That 4 inch circle must be smaller than the front sight bead at 100.

Good shooting! Especially since that isn't a powder puff load.

Over the years with peep sights, I use them a little different than most. When sighting in I never have the font sight directly where I want to hit. In the case of the bull on the target my sight is at the bottom of the bull. This way I can always see my target and for hunting it provides a better view and depending on distance you can easily adjust higher or lower. It may seem counter intuitive not to have your front sight directly on target, but it is not. Also, it all depends where you have your rear sight located on your gun. I have mine installed where my buck horn sights were located. The further back you locate your peep sights you will notice more movement from your front sight. That is why most buck horn sights are located on the barrel as it is a mid-point which helps in less front sight movement. The further back the sights are located the better the accuracy however you really need to have a steady hand for accuracy to keep your front sight on target.

Fantastic shooting. I use the same 6 o’clock hold for post sights and use point of impact for peeps.

:D 100 yards, open sights, big boomer….I’d say that was some excellent shootings. I pity the buffalo that wanders past you.

Some years back in Maine at a bud's land I took down a moose at about 125 yards, one and done dripped right in its tracks.

That’s the way to do it, too big of an animal to track down and pack out. Plus a Maine moose is much larger than the little guys around here in the west.

That is excellent 100yd shooting in my book!
I would also consider your loads to be pretty stout. I use 405 gr cast lead bullets over 36.0 gr. of H4198 and that's really all the recoil I want.
I think your load would make my teeth rattle.
