With my poor vision I haven’t been shooting much lately. I can see good enough to shoot safely on my range but not in a situation where i didn’t know the surroundings. I only shot one tube of HV shorts at 50 yards. I was able to hit the 12x12” trap all but once. Just a poor decision to pull the trigger when I did.

Not being able to see good enough to shoot tight groups has changed my type of shooting as I shoot almost exclusively offhand. It’s been that way ever since I bought this place and pushed up a berm.

This is my favorite offhand rifle. It’s a Henry Small Game Carbine with a custom ‘Rifleman’ loop. The rear sight has is a European Steven’s 3-hole peep which I really like. The front sight is a Lyman Globe with a peep insert. This combination is one of my favorite for iron sights. I was shooting into shadows so the middle sized peep was chosen. In darker situations I use the large peep and in bright sunshine the smaller one.

That’s an interesting rear sight. Very clever.

Good for you, Gene. Once you get the cataract surgery done, you'll be back to shooting as much as ever.

I've seen you post on that Henry with that sight at various times over the years. I have seen that sight on some old Stevens while wandering around at gun shows. Peep sights versions of various models were much more popular and common on rimfires in the days before everyone was scoping their 22s. I remember peep sight options on various models of Winchester, Remington, Savage/Stevens, Mossbergs and so on. I even had one or two. One was a Mossberg 46B that came with a factory peep. That was a fine 22 bolt rifle.

Thanks. I’ve had it for decades. The European threads are slightly different than ours so if it’s taken on or off several times they get stripped.

I do tend to shoot it the most.

This is my 50 yard range just outside the door. In the winter it’s easy to get too but as you can see it’s always in the shade in the winter.
This is looking north and I’m standing 50 feet from my door. Not a lot except in the winter. Last winter this spot had six feet of drifted snow. I’m debating on whether to put up a range out in the field. Vision is better but access is terrible. It’s 157 yards to the tree line. My property only goes out 90 yards.

Too bad you can't stretch it to 100 yards. That distance is used as a standard for so much shooting.

The new berm to the south is 110 yards. The problem is it’s even less accessible in the winter and it faces north just like the 25 yarder.

I could put out some targets to the northeast at about 300 yards but it’s not in a spot where I would push up a berm. It’s currently a hay field and it would disrupt the harvest. What I want to do is put up some moveable traps where I could shoot from my front deck.

Not hard to imagine at all.
