Morning range fun with the old Winchester 1892

Perfect Fall type morning to get my first shots with the new to me Winchester 1892 so got the Bulls Eye Saloon opened up and ready for some
44-40 lead! For 128 years of use it ran really well and faster you lever it the better it worked as I had a hang up cycling to slow. Not bad on the paper plate target from 20 yds. just to see where it would hit.

Did not touch the sights and if I got a good focus thru that tiny V notch I could hit targets very well. https://youtu.be/YclLryTJZUg?si=zKiWy32khXQ_F-gV

Ran 35 rounds of the HSM Cowboy Action ammo thru it and it functioned well and hit where I was aiming. Will be great to make up some other loads to try later as I get the used brass count up a bit and my loading dies.

I’ve shot a lot of Great War Enfields. Most had dark pitted barrels from shooting corrosion ammo.

Dark pitted barrel this 1892 has but the rifling still looks good. Now looking at that plate target it looks like there could be 2 key hole hits so this morning I cleaned and slugged the bore. Bore measured .430 all the way down and the HSM ammo cast bullet was .428 so would not surprise me with a tumbling bullet. Been there before with my old Henry 44 Mag carbine that had a .432 bore with tumbling bullets.
However I do have some Xtreme plated .430 sized 200 gr bullets along with some MB 200 gr. I might try with 6 gr. of Red Dot or 8-9 gr. Unique. Plan is to take some of the new HSM rounds and remove the bullet and powder and reload with what I want to try and see how it shoots.
Another thing it took a while to get the bore clean from the 35 rounds I fired. After running the brush thru I would get what looked like black oil running out the barrel which was lead particles even though the bore did not look leaded up. Think the bore roughness was scraping lead off the bullet which is why I may try the plated bullets.
