Frontier percussion cap rifle....

I like to shoot my Frontier percussion cap-lock rifle once in awhile too. It's identical to the flintlock just the cap version. Flintlock is maple and this one is walnut. Today was 25F and breezy so felt colder. Snowing on and off as well.


50 yds off hand, had a good day for sure, never missed a single one.


50 grains Triple 7 2fg powder
.480 lead ball
.015 patch


To give you an idea of the distance for 8" steel target I took a couple of photos, 50 yds doesn't sound like much but it's a stretch out there with open fixed primitive sights.
I have been working on my breathing to help stay on target, as well as the follow through. I found yesterday that my follow-through on the black powder guns REALLY improved my Highwall shooting.

Great, RR. I still think of getting back into muzzle loading. I do miss my percussion Frontier, but it would now be way too heavy for me to manage, so I would have to go with something smaller. Not sure how doable this would be because it would be a long, long drive just to find any black powder, now. Even our local gun shops don't bother to carry Pyrex or other substitutes, anymore. Have no idea of I could even find percussion caps.

Anyway, keep shooting. I do enjoy reading about your adventures in muzzle loading. May be as close as I ever come to muzzle loading, again.

I would also think a Traditions Crockett might work. Nice RR. Nothing wrong with a capper at all especially when you have all the caps in Canada

Shooting offhand at a plate that seems to blend in with the background aint that easy. Great Shooting!

I gotta say You are my Hero!!! Man, how I wish I could shoot offhand like you can.

I marvel at videos from guys like Hickock45 can shoot so incredibly well offhand.

Is this just the culmination of years and years of practice?

I'm not sure there's enough money, time, and ammo for me to shoot that well offhand. You folks that do it have my admiration.
