Fun at the pistol range

Post by Hatchdog » Fri Jan 20, 2023 12:09 pm

Yesterday I met a friend at an indoor pistol range in Spokane. After enjoying a breakfast (picture two old guys with white beards sitting at a table) at a nearby restaurant we did some shooting. First up was his new Ruger LCP for first shots. It didn’t like the Winchester range ammo he had which had a pretty large metplate and the pistol had a couple of miss feeds with it. But it shot both the defensive ammo he brought perfectly. I think that with some RN type range ammo it will be fine.

He also brought a Fire Star 9mm Interarms used to import back in the 80’s. I used to sell them but never fired one until yesterday. It was okay but for me the trigger guard would hit my finger when it recoiled. I’ve seen them for sale on our local trader site and have considered one but now I won’t.

I made first shots from my CZ-75 I bought last June. Yeah, June. I bought it to beat the new Washington State mag size restriction and have had it to the range once before but after shooting a few rifles I was too cold to continue. Man, what’s wrong with me to leave such a fine shooting pistol idle for so long. It shot very soft and was very accurate. What a joy. Next time I’ll take it to my regular range where I can shoot from a rest to get a better feel for accuracy but just offhand it was great. Non adjustable sight so there will be no “sighting in”.

Shot my S&W M/19 with the low velocity 357 ammo I loaded for it. I was surprised my load with 7.0 of Unique under a 158 XTP was as stout as it was. I may look into a plated bullet with a lighter charge. Shot those, a few of my Henry/686 loads and finished with a few of my low velocity plated bullet 38 specials. My friend had a big grin of his face after shooting those “popcorn fart” 38’s. He isn’t very experienced with shooting and I don’t think he has ever shot such mild loads before.

Sure was nice to get some trigger time in and come on spring, let’s get outdoors and shoot.

Yeah, I've heard great things about the CZ 75 and the very few I've handled in stores impressed me. The are very hard to find up here, though. If I ever get back into autoloaders, that 75 would be on my list.

Had one and loved it should have kept it probably. Prices now are up there. I knew when you bought it you would like it. Check out the SAR K-12 Sport duty and the SAR PL8st. Both are CZ clones and have very good ratings.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

That 7 gr. Unique 158 load is a good one. For something milder I like the 6.0 of Power Pistol too. Sounds like a great time Hatch!

Thanks forty, I have some Power Pistol on hand and I’ll give it a try.
