Range Report: 10/22 Sporter

I haven’t shot this Ruger since I left Washington. It’s a pre-warning Sporter from 1970. I have two other Sporters and they are both fingergroove and get more shooting. It’s odd shooting a semi-auto after having shot levers and bolts for so many years. I can remember when semi’s where about all I shot.

I like the newer 15 round magazines even though I usually only put 10 rounds in them.

Love those vintage finger groove Sporters. That's my favorite 10/22 vintage, back when all versions were walnut and receivers were anodized, not painted. Of course, Ruger was a different company in those days.

Bill Ruger didn’t like hi-cap magazines. I was never a fan of the rotary mags and thought the 25’s were too long.

I think in the early years they outsourced the stocks from Overton. They are my favorite too.

Although Ruger still builds a great firearm that will last for years, the classic touches are gone. Time moves on and so does costs and production realities.

Great memories for me with the 10/22. A friend in high school introduced me to the 10/22. It was his uncle's, a first year production gun and his uncle loaned it to him for one summer. We spent a lot of time plinking with the 10/22 down in our pasture. It was all tin can and dirt clod shooting in those days.

Years later I got one for myself for squirrel hunting, even though a 10/22 went contrary to the squirrel rifle myth about a squirrel rifle having to be ultra accurate. Always thought that was nonsense and, sure enough, I got as many squirrels using the 10/22 as with my best bolt guns. For me, squirrel hunting was always about the hunting, anyway, not the shooting. At one time or another I even used revolvers, bows and even air rifles.

"It was all tin cans and dirt clod shooting in those days". Certainly was, and now that I think about, that's what I still do in the desert with my .22lr rifles. Fun!

Yeah, it was fun and so different than the highly regulated shooting most of us do these days. You are very lucky to have a place to do that kind of shooting. Enjoy.
