A little trail action with the S&W 629 Trail Boss !

Post by fortyshooter » Wed Sep 28, 2022 7:51 pm

Another great Fall morning so headed out to the range to cut grass and enjoy a bit of trail riding on the mini bike. Brought along my S&W 629-2E
which has the 3 inch barrel. The later built Trail Boss revolver was based on the earlier 629 2E which had the improved endurance package and 3 inch barrel so that's what I call mine.
A quick check on a target with some 200 gr. Red Dot and the beefy 300 gr. Hammer loads and all shot well using double action trigger pulls...this thing is sweet!
So after a rest break on the porch off on the mini bike to the trail with the Trail Boss tucked in a nice outside holster and that is where I met
up with some trouble! See it here... https://youtu.be/sUwqfXGhyZE

Glad I had loaded up with those 300 gr. hammerheads! Anyway that was taken care of and after some more riding called it a day sittin on the porch
and this one I can shoot off of! :D
I had bought this 629 along with a nice Model 66 357 some years ago from an elderly neighbor and got a good deal for both. Story has it that he got it from another neighbor gun collector down the other end of my street. Seems that guy needed a beat around car so my buddy traded a car he had for the 629. The 629-2E was a short run offering I found out after I bought it built in 1989. They have since jumped up well in value and best of all it shoots very well and makes a nice trail carry revolver for .44 Mag.

Looked like a decent size bear.
Is the Hammer a factory load or other?

I loaded a bunch of them few years ago using Alliant 2400. Trying to remember if those were MB bullets.

I cast a Lyman 429650 300 gr., but mine are dropping at over 320.
I shoot it in the 444's, over some 2400... ;) :D

That’s a well armed mini-bike. Not positive but the hump in your bear makes me think a Grizzly may have wandered your way. Good think you gave him two in the front shoulder and took him out, no telling what carnage could have happened.
