July 19th 2022 Flintlock

Post by RanchRoper » Tue Jul 19, 2022 8:34 pm

I was ringing some steel today with my Frontier .50 cal flintlock. When the high winds started to pick up, I shot these 3 rounds before calling it a day.

Been wondering where you were. :)

You have to be the most consistent, steady shooter around. You're a magician with these front loaders.

Those little guys in the corners are tough to nail. I don't shoot much paper lately, mostly my 8" steel gong. Paper targets are getting expensive too. But I like the splash ones so I can see the hits and correct accordingly. Been working on my follow through, it pays off when I remember to do it. Hold after every shot to at least a 3 count. So far pretty good luck with flints, the odd misfire once in awhile until I knap the edge or reset the flint. Rifle seems to like GOEX 2fg powder in pan and main charge. 3fg not as much. As long as I clear the vent hole before priming, and use very little primer in the pan. Also find better ignition if I don't pack the ball/patch/powder down tight like I'm pounding a fence post in. Need a little air down there to burn powder. :)

Ordered a real nice little belt carry hawk so maybe I'll post some tomahawk targets one day...haha

RR you're falling behind. I've been waiting to see some more examples of your fine shooting. :D

Have a belt hawk too but I haven't thrown it. I can embarrass myself in many other ways.
