9-10-2016 Tack driver- well, sort of

So, I've got the H001 and the Leupold 2-7X scope pretty much dialed in now. Is it a tack driver? Well, not with me shooting it. But it does what I was hoping it would do, which is to allow me to hit small steel swingers and shotgun clays consistently at 100 yards.

Shooting with the stock rear sight and a Hiviz fiber optic front sight, I had hit a wall. Despite shooting the H001 3-4 times a week all summer, I just wasn't getting any better. The scope allows me to get better. Still, it does sorta feel like cheating.

I have scopes on every rifle except the H001, but I could easily go back. I just like having one rifle w/o a scope right now.

I'm just not a scope guy. I probably should get peep sights on more of my guns.

Glade you got it setup so you can enjoy it more.
I had to scope mine as well.
And Iam about to trade in one of my favorite
Military rifles. I just can't shoot it well enuf.
The rear site is just to far away from my eye to focus. Well.

I would say if there is any cheating it is you cheating your self out of being able to get the most out of shooting by being able to shoot better and hit what your shooting at. I know all us lever gun shooters prefer not having scopes. It seems like when we get to where we have a tough time with the standard iron sights we go to peeps and see improvement and enjoy shooting again. Then as the years go by we start to struggle again and maybe have to consider a scope. So I think you should choose a scope you can see well with and keep the size down to suit the trim lines of a lever action and start to enjoy shooting good again. I am fortunate at 67 to still be able to see well and use open and peeps but I have scoped lever actions that I enjoy shooting and don't mind one bit how they look. I don't put scopes on them that have huge objectives and 30MM tubes that look like you need man hole covers for lens caps. I like a 2-7X28 or 32MM for my lever rifles and fixed 4x.

the only centerfire rifle I own that doesn't have a scope is my grandfather's Winchester Model 94 .... not a matter of cheating, rather one of preference .... I can and do shoot open sight rifles but I prefer a scope

Building a rifle which best takes advantage of your abilities isn't cheating, it's smart.

Likely lots of old west cowboys would have scopes if they could have...I'm not a fan of the looks of them, but an old cowboy having a lizard for supper cuz he missed his sage hen at 100 yards would disagree with me.
