Range Report: CZ 455 Ultra Match .22LR

Post by Sir Henry » Sun May 15, 2022 4:30 pm

I was shooting offhand at the gong at 50 yards. I’ve never liked tangent sights until NCG taught me how to use them. Now they are one of my favorite open sights. Thanks Joanie.

I could only hit the 5x8” gong about half the time. Not making excuses but it was hard to see.

Good for you. I need a good bullseye target to do my best with open sights. Any other targets - gongs, spinners and so on - make me less effective. One plus for your setup compared to ours is that yours is out in the open, so no shadows. We're surrounded by trees, so shadows are always an issue. We have shadows on our backstop most of the day, so then we need scopes to even see the targets. No coincidence, then, that most of pour airguns wear scopes. Not making excuses, though. :)

Do you folks shooting target rimfire with the lead bullets find that you get leading in the barrel?

I have avoided target ammo due to this concern and just shoot copper wash. Now, I’m not shooting target class rifles but I’m thinking about getting a little deeper into rimfire target shooting.

Thanks

No I never get leading in rimfire. These are the first non Norma ammo that I’ve shot through this rifle. I have limited Norma ammo here in Wisconsin. Most of my rimfire ammo is still in Seattle. I leave today go fetch it and my Ford van.

I shot again this morning and had better luck because the lighting was so much better. Here you can easily see the orange gong.

The tree in the center is getting relocated and the berm will extend another ten feet to the left.

If you are getting leading in a 22 LR bore, it's a bad barrel, not the ammo, usually a rough bore or a bore with choke points. In such a barrel, you will still get leading with copper washed bullets, since the bullet is easily cut by the rifling. The copper wash is a far cry from actual copper plating on centerfire bullets.

The advantage of copper washing is that you get a bullet with less lube. Some actions are susceptible to gunk buildup from lube, but I've still had no issues in my semi-auto 22s form using lead bullets, nor has gunk buildup been an issue unless I get a batch of overly lubed ammo. That's happened on rare occasions with CCI SV, for instance, but still no leading issues with that ammo.

Bottom line is that I can't even estimate how many rounds of lead 22 LR ammo I've shot in various guns without any leading issues.

Thanks SH and NCG, I’ll not hesitate to use target ammo when the time comes.

I shoot Federal in my Henrys but not my CZs. They deserve better ammo.

I know you shoot Norma Tac ammo in those. I should try some in my Ruger 77/22 when I can find some again for sale. As far as CZ's go Bandit has all the CZ's
