I stopped down at the range today for a bit. A guy near me was having a heckuva time. First he was shooting his AR-15. A cease fire was called, and when the RO asked him to lock his bolt open, it wouldn't lock open. RO tried it, and it wouldn't work. Hmmm...

Next, he pulled, out a bolt action rifle he had recently bought from a buddy. Before long, a big black screw was sitting on the guy's bench. One of the action screws had fallen out.

This guy probably should have packed up and gone home at that point, as he was batting 0 for 2 on the first two guns he brought out.

Me? I had my Henry H001 out. I shot pretty well at some itty bitty steel at 50 yards, and so, 12 inch steel swingers at 100. I then re-confirmed for myself that it's hard to hit clay pigeons at 100 yards with iron sights. I did hit one, but that was all I could manage.

Wow! I'd also "tip my cap," and probably shout "Bravo," too.

A standard clay pigeon size is 110 mm overall diameter and 25-26 mm in height. If it were hanging stationary, the diameter might be fairly easy to hit with your .22 at 100 yards; height would be tougher. But hitting either dimension WHILE FLYING is even more impressive!!

Quite the difference from hitting the bird with 7-1/2 or 8 shot at less than 50 yards! Good job at the range, Ditto....sounds like great fun!

Oh, and just to be clear, those clays were pinned to the fence, not flying. With a properly zeroed scope and shooting from a bench, it only takes one or two shots to shoot them with a .22 rifle. With iron sights, it's much harder- at least for me. The front sight bead is quite a bit larger than the clay at that distance.

I just bought an entire box of clay pigeons for my next range trip. Planning on crushing them with my 357 BBS. If 100 yards doesn't work out I'll just creep up closer until I find a manageable distance. No need to waste too much ammo!

Sounds like a good day, ditto, even if the clay pigeons were a bit far. I can do a decent job on with the Henry peep sight out to maybe 50 yards. I haven't even tried them at a distance longer than that.
