Feb 21st, Frozen North

Post by RanchRoper » Mon Feb 21, 2022 4:00 pm

-10F at the range. Thankfully no wind.

Shooting a little contest target for another group I belong to.

25 yds off hand
Frontier .50 cal
50 grains Triple 7
.010 patch
.490 lead ball

Supposed to put 1 in each quadrant on an 8x11 sheet target. No do-overs. Only 4 shots, which was fine with me because the last one to the right was with frozen fingers.

RR -10F and you're out shooting???? You've got to be very brave to handle the frozen Tundra. I'm shivering just thinking about being out in that temp. I've heard tell that black powder freezes solid at -15F.

Nice job!

that's true but in my case if I was to get out in temps that low I have little doubt that I'd age even faster :?

Im glad to know there are still some up there that might freeze. Lately I think there might be a shortage of some.

I might be in temperatures as cold as you and your continuing to shoot in the cold is an inspiration to me to continue to shoot. I may not be as accurate as you however I’m still going to shoot.

I had the driveway plowed so I can get out however getting back up the hill is questionable. I take Jim to the airport on Wednesday

Roper, what I don’t understand is how you are able to get a cap on the nipple in those temps. I would probable drop five for every one I got on the nipple.
