64gr is a sweet spot. 65gr fps started to taper off significantly. Both 64gr and 65gr had 1 shot each that were dead on bulls eye.

Used my home made 1" high cheek riser which made for a far superior shooting position behind the scope. There were NO flyers.
I use 8208 extensively in my 5.56 and some 308 loads. Burns Very VERY clean. WLR Mag primers.

really appreciate the info .... over the years we have used several different IMR powders but never 8208 .... we will be using the 300 gr CT Ballistic Silver Tip Bullets ... CT = Combined Technology, a joint project between Nosler and Winchester .... a bit of history about it http://www.winchester.com/library/news/ ... ertip.aspx .... loading data I have on hand http://load-data.nosler.com/nosler-load ... -300gr.pdf .... haven't decided which powder they recommend to try first ..... I'm much more comfortable working with components that have been recommended by sources I trust

were you dealing with new brass or that which had been fired ?

Both. The case length is critical to me on the JHP with cannelure. The cannelure is setting the COAL and the RCBS setting/crimp die needs all lengths to be the same to put the crimp in the cannelure. I like consistency and my loads with the 300gr jacketed need to be all exact. I have lengths ranging from 2.091 - 2.104 on the Starline fired and unfired.

makes sense .... to begin with I plan to use Oregon Trail 350 grain lead RNFP http://www.cabelas.com/product/oregon-t ... 70+bullets .... have 750 on hand .... don't really feel I need to spend more for 405 gr bullets for punching holes in paper .... if/when I load for hunting, I still don't know what I'll use .... there are folks on the forum that swear by lead, others by jacketed .... my inclination is jacketed because they can be loaded hotter and should shoot flatter

My old rolling block was used over 70 years ago to bring down elk and black bear with 405gr lead. The original owner, a relative, also shot for fun out to 1000 or so yds. I don't know if there was jacked for 45-70 back then. 405 lead from 200 yds in kills most everything it meets up with on this continent. I like jacketed now because it fits the BDC profile on the scope I mounted on it. Other than that, 14gr of Unique with 405 or 300 lead is pure fun.
