Pleasant Surprise Leaving the Range Today

Post by Headhog » Mon Sep 13, 2021 5:04 pm

Packed up my Les Baer 1911's and my Ruger American Rimfire for today's range trip. Nothing special planned, so I didn't take any pictures, but I want to test some different loads for these two 1911's. Seems they just don't like 200 gr. SWC bullets. Today I tried seating the bullets deeper to see if that made a difference. Out of 100 rounds I had 3 failures to feed. I guess these 1911's just like a steady diet of 230 gr. round nose bullets. I can shoot those all day long without a hiccup.

Then I switched over to the Ruger rimfire and shot a batch of hanging steel plates I set at 40 yds. That was a fun time, but even with a bolt action rifle you can burn up 100 rounds real fast. Good this I had plenty of rimfire ammo with me. :D

Packed up my gear and started driving out our range access road. The range is about 1/3 mi from the main road. Our club property extends about 100 yards past the gate so we maintain it. They keep the grass mowed about 20 yards wide on the one side and let the grass grow tall about 15 yards before the wood line.

Just casually walking along in the mowed area was a flock of about 15-20 turkeys. I've never see that many birds in one spot before. As I approached I tried to get a picture with my cellphone, but they turkeys were not very cooperative. The flock turned and marched right into the tall grass along the wood line. I took a few pictures but it's almost impossible to pick them out from the tall grass. Anyway it was fun to see that many birds together in one area.

I see them quite frequently riding the bicycle on the trail I ride. I recently saw about 8 large ones in an alfalfa field. Ill try to ge a pic of some when I see them again.

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

Glad you had a fun outing. We're awaiting all this rain and wind they keep talking about. Haven't seen it as of yet.

I had a good bunch of turkeys at my range property couple years ago but have seen nothing since. Miss seeing them around there on the trail cameras.
