Range Report: sporting clays in TX

I arrived yesterday and this morning we drove to Weber’s Shooting Range. We shot until it got too hot. I don’t have a lot of shotgun experience but did quite well especially at first. Of course the first stations are the easiest. It wasn’t until the 8th, 9th and 10th station that I started to get more misses than hits.
After that we went to Fort Hood where I registered to be able to hunt on post. We logged in and reserved a spot and will head out in an hour to do some dove hunting.

We did some dove hunting in the afternoon but didn’t get any. We only saw one and this might be the reason.

I believe this is a mockingbird.

This is typical of where we were. We walked around the lake and then sat in the shadows.

Even though we never got a shot off we enjoyed getting outside.

We stayed until sunset which is the cutoff time.

Wow some great shots with the camera Gene! Nice place you were at. Were you shooting your own shotgun or the range gun?
About the doves we have them around our neighborhood all the time and mostly perched on the power lines but no hunting in the city and they know it.

Love that country. Thanks for the pics. Had an old friend tat used to hunt Ft. Hood when he lived in Texas. From what he used to tell me, it's quite a place.

Another day of dove hunting and another zero. The weather up north hasn’t changed yet and not to many birds stay here for the summer.

Dove season here in Washington St generally opens on 9/1 (not sure about this year due to the drought) and it seems like every year right at the end of August we get a light frost or some cold nights which moves all the doves south. Not this year, I bet there are plenty of doves around here. I’m north of Spokane but to find doves we used to go south. Bet down on the Palouse there are doves aplenty. Figures this year you are down south and the birds are still up north in your stomping grounds.

Yep. I miss Spokane. We camped all around Long Lake and almost anywhere between the river and Deer Park. Last time I was there many places where we camped had homes.
If we really wanted to venture away as teenagers we could camp and fish all the way to Ione. To those not familiar with Ione that is an upper case i not a lower case L and is pronounced ahyuhn.
