Range Report: a real range (sort of)

This morning I went to the Lincoln National Forest range. Here you can shoot almost anywhere on public land. Even the forest right next to town.
People complained about the noise so the forest people selected a spot outside of town and made it into a range. It is unofficial and unmarked. You have to know it’s there. Yes the mud puddle stopped me 20 yards short.

It was getting trashy the last time I was here and I can see it’s been cleaned. Someone even added this table.

I shot bench on all three targets. This was my setup as I didn’t bring a rest.

Benchrest at 50 yards. I started out shooting all over the place and then got better. This is the opposite of my norm. I shot 12 rounds as I had two extras in the sleeve.

My go to round did okay. I was getting floaters and it was difficult to see anything at times.

Ten rounds at 100 yards. Yes I only count 7 too.

They really cleaned it up. There was a lot of mostly things people were shooting. Plus they leveled it more and dug out the backstop more.
I estimated the distances. The 50 yard target was as close to 50 as I could guess. I put it closer to the berm than I did the bench. The 100 yards was more like 90. But maybe not. There was lots of room to move the table back 10 yards. I’m not sure they even measured

Hmmm. Nice spot. I'm somewhat surprised that no one has complained about lead contamination tho.

Now I know that Subaru could have made it through, or around that puddle.

No going around and I don’t have the clearance. Even if it was bone dry I would have bottomed out.

Agree with that, a few years ago I was with a friend driving a old 2 wheel drive pick-up on a not very well maintained road. Came upon a big mud puddle, I told him to turn around but he said no, I can make it. Didn't see the big rock he got high centered on. Would have been a long walk back to town, luckily he had a cell signal and was able to call his step-son to come pull us out.
Back when I had my old jeep I would attempt some nasty looking spots but not many big mud puddles, too easy to get really stuck.
Wish I had the money to build (and maintain) a rock crawling rig, somewhat similar to what I would try with my old jeep but a whole lot more extreme.

Oh, I know, just kidding. Would have probably tried it in my 3rd gen 4Runner though!

I was in Moab yesterday (I think) and every other vehicle is a Jeep.
Taking a big risk or hauling everything the last 50 yards. That was my choice. Big risk and little gain.
