I decided take a drive today and head out to the grasslands to do some steel slapping. As you know Im not much for paperwork. There are times when paperwork is necessary but not for shooting in my case anyway. I loaded up the Bonneville and headed north east from my house. its about 25 miles out there. Sometimes the wind blows you out but I jut try to pretend Im a tough old cowboy from north of that Montana line and lean into it. Today though it was cloudy and no wind for the most part. I took a series of pictures as I dont have the go pro camera like Forty does and even if I did I couldnt come close to the entertainment quality that he does. First photo is arrival and target set up. You can see its wide open out there. They had alot of rain earlier in the year and its still greener out there than I have seen it for quite sometime.
Next 2 photos are the targets I brought today. Clay pigeons I place on the bank and the Buffalo. The Buffalo is hanging on a frame affair that I got from Shooting Targets 7. I bought it to take to Texas this year but I wish I would have bought one sooner. This thing works great and it easy to set up. They also sell a set of extension legs so you can make to taller if you wish. I dont have a welder and Im not as handy with building stuff like this so I bought one. I did build one out of PVC pipe but it takes up alot of room


Next photo is where I parked for shooting my Henrys for today. Its about 80 yards from the Buffalo. You can see them resting on the back window in there nice Henry Orange cases


Wait a minute what happened here how did those Marlins get in here.
I brought out the 38-55 to slap the steel around. I also brought out the Marlin Model 60 to see how it would do after a good cleaning. The 38-55 performed well. Next photo is the Buffalo with 12 out of 16 shots on it from the 80 yard range. I was using a 255 grain cast bullet that I had loaded up over 18 grains of 5744. It shoots good and is the load I used when I use to shoot levergun silly wet.
This photo also gives you a closer view of the stand I am using. I ended up shooting about 30 rounds at the gong including 4 from 100 yards offhand hitting to Buffalo 2 times out of the 4. Im only half as good as Ranchroper he would of been 4 for 4. I ended up shortly there after having to move because beyond the ridge some cows were wandering right into the area beyond my targets. They could careless that I was shooting there first and I didnt want to take a chance and hit someones cows. I shot the Marlin 60 for a while at a closer range of about 40 yards and it functioned fine when the ammo I was using was doing its part. I have some of that Remington 22 ammo with the golden bullet in it. I dont think the quality control on some of it was very good as I get some shots that goo poof instead of bang. The scope I put on the 60 to is a cheap Bushnell and its coming off. It is so blurry it drives me crazy. I have a 2x7x35 Burris scope so Im going to try that. One other note chasing empty shotgun shell hulls around with 22 is a blast. You can get some pretty good air time with those doing that. Hope you enjoyed the report.

Fun day Al. NE Colorado can be a wide open opportunity. I’m familiar with those danged cows showing up. Once set up the tent with my wife. Woke up to mooing. Oh well, not gonna change them.

Like your Buffalo. I also like the clay targets for the Marlin. My favorite.

Wow that is some wide open country Al ! Does anyone own that land or is public property? Is that windmill pump for water irrigation?
Nice shooting and I bet the sound travels a good distance. Yeah my old Go Pro is still clunking along and takes forever to upload a 10 minute video!

Love that great wide open. We lived across the border in Sydney, Ne for a few years and used to drive down through Sterling and on to Denver, now and then. Very familiar with that country.

Love that Buffalo. Bet RR could use something like that.

Those Remington Goldens have gone up and down with QC over the years. We still have several of the Buckets that we bought back when 22 ammo was scarce and we grabbed anything we could get. Really need to shoot some plinking and shoot some of it up.

Here is a link to it Forty. Its actually forest service land. Ive been going out there for years and they do have a public range out there that is free but I chose to not go there as it is heavily used on the weekends.

Here is a link to that range. One thing that concerns me is alot of people go out there and trash it up with cans and bottles there shooting at. I keep thinking one day there Forest service will shu it down to shooting outside of the range provided but it hasnt happened yet. The windmill pumps water for the range cattle that are on the range. Im not sure how that works whether ranchers lease it or pay to graze it with there cattle but there is a herd of cows in that area. Its a great place to shoot and I go there 5 or 6 times a year. The peace and quiet out there is a real treat.

Looks like ya had a good time right up until the invasion.

That Buffalo is 12 x 24. I got it from make it ring targets as Shooting Targets 7 didnt have any. I did however get an Isis target from Shooting Targets 7 and it would be a little smaller target

Good deal. the new gong I have coming is 12x24 but more vertical. Human swilly wet.

Al, that was a great report. Nice area, targets and like you said, peace and quite. I like that. Now you know why I go to the desert. Same.

Great report Al. Lots of wide open spaces there to enjoy. Looks like a fun day of shooting and always fun shooting steel.
