I was talking to a few locals about not being able to shoot back home and one gentleman offered to let me shoot on his place. It was a two mile 4-wheeler ride to where he often shoots.

I brought a SGC in .22 and shot 22HV shorts at about 25 yards then when back further to shoot at 50. I think all my bb shooting helped. I was far better with the Henry from the last time I shot it.

Gene, you are already making inroads with some locals. You are certainly going in the right direction. Good for you!

That's a very encouraging sign, finding a local who will let you shoot. Glad all that BB gun shooting is paying off. Keep it up.

Sounds like you are on the way to a great place to live. Now have you checked out any area gun supply shops?

I was talking to a lot of people about moving to Montana from the Seattle area. As soon as I mentioned the political party that I belonged too they welcomed me. People were telling me of all the places the locals shot.

Hunting is a different story. You have to pay to hunt on private land. Especially if you are not a resident.

I was getting into the habit of rushing shots because I wasn’t shooting enough. As soon as I didn’t make a big production of “going to the range” I was more relaxed. With the relaxation shooting became more natural like it had been most of my life.

Wolf creek only has a ma & pa general store, a tavern, and a newly opened ice cream stand for the summer. Craig the next small town is a little bigger and they have a dozen fly fishing shops. You have to go to Great Falls or Helena for most things.

I’m going to make a separate post about real estate after I get some sleep.

My wife watched a video on Youtube about RV lots for sale over by Superior. I looked at them but its quite a ways from where we are at right now but the lots looked interesting. Ive been looking at the area you are in on Google maps.

That is what this area has become. Lots of RV parks that you buy and do whatever you want. To maximize profit most have a dozen sites per acre. My backyard campground only has two.

Paying hunt on private land has become big business throughout the West. My daughter's in laws run a farm in South Dakota and they host pheasant hunters during pheasant season in their home. The pheasant hunting business has been much more profitable and dependable than the farming. Same for a lot of ranches throughout the West.

we are currently camped in a very good pheasant hunting area in South Dakota .... a lack of heavy snow this past winter has the locals in high hope of a good season .... reservations made by folks from out of state are said to be strong

When I was taking care of the place in Ephrata after my father-in-law passed I became one of the locals and had local rights. The true son was/is a rich doctor from Seattle and they charged him. He hated it so they would charge him more.

Having coffee every morning with a dozen neighbors can be very educational. Men would sit at tables on one side of the room and the women would sit on the opposite. It was usually a group conversation with people talking loudly between tables with quieter smaller conversations going on also. In a two-hour span maybe 40 people would come through with some only to say hi while their coffee flasks were being filled.

We sat near the coffee machine and waited on ourselves except for kitchen orders. The coffee was free if we tipped the waitress who sometimes would join us for a minute here and there.

I miss that.
