January 16th, some time in the early 1800's

Great day at the range today. Makin' smoke with my Frontier .50 cal. 33F with a 25 mph light breeze today.

Shooting off hand standing at 50 yds. Yup, gotta learn to shoot that way instead of from 1 knee all the time. Can't go around on 1 knee at rendezvous'. Have to shoot with the big dogs.

A dozen or so .490 balls on a 12" target. I changed out the primitive rear fixed factory sight last week to a Skinner ladder sight like on my 1860 Henry. Ya not period correct but style won't mean squat if the bear kills me. I am much happier with this rear sight, and feel more confident with it.
The flyer at the top is me accidently toughing the trigger after I had set the rear trigger. So I will be adjusting that trigger so it's not beyond feather light. Too dangerous for me. I want at least a tiny pull on it. The top part of my trigger finger is gone thanks to a big mama cow years ago, so I have some nerves there but not near enough for that light trigger. Rifle shoots awesome, dry patched a couple of times during the shoot and gave her a good clean at home.

Hope you like the report, what a fun way to spend a day... :D

Frustrating I could not get the hang of that factory buckhorn sight. Maybe try it again another time.

Thanks all, it is certainly an experience shooting one of these old timers. Think the Henry might get a workout tomorrow.

Great shooting. If that .50 is a 1 in 66 twist, try some hornady conicals they are heavier than roundball and are better for hunting. They are extremely accurate in my TC Hawken.
It's a 1:48

That target is as “hang it on the fridge” worthy as any of our kids school work art projects. Pretty incredible shooting.

Every time I go to our local range there is this one guy shooting his muzzle loader at 50 while standing. I have never looked at his target but I will so so next time I’m there. I bet he is really good with as much practice as he gets.

Even with the 39" barrel the rifle is amazingly well balanced, obviously designed for off hand shooting. I think it weighs about 7 lbs. Those old gun builders knew what they were doing.
