.357 Magnum Ballistics

I'll be sighting in my Steel 357 tomorrow so I ran a ballistics calculator on my load. It is a 140XTP which should leave the 20" barrel at about 1700fps. The thing that caught my eye was the fact that at 100 yds that round should have virtually the same velocity as it will have at the muzzle of my GP 100 4".

When I first got my .357 BB steel, I was going to develop a hunting load for it. I bought some 4227 and some XTP 158 grain HPs. I went to the outdoor range with my good buddy who has a chronograph. As a benchmark I chronographed some American Eagle factory ammo in 158 grain SPs. Box said something like 1240 fps muzzle vel. Chronograph of this round through the Henry was 1800 fps. I decided that was definitely good enough for a hog up to 150 lbs and called it good. I've been using the 4227 for accuracy rounds at the range.

Even a moderate .357 load gets out to 100 out of a revolver pretty darn fast. Out of a rifle? It's a pretty potent round. It'll get there in a hurry and with authority.
