Three to shoot today

Today I took three to my friends place to make sure they were on for this week ends start of deer season. I may not even go if I don't like the weather or if my back is already hurting like it is right now. I usually have no problem finding a reason to not go deer hunting. I have never liked deer hunting except I like the burger I make from it. Today was the Marlin 444, Marlin 336 Zane Gray octagon barrel 30-30 and my fine Remington Classic in 250 Savage. I pulled the bullets from the 250 Savage loads and replaced the 87 gr. Hornady with 87 gr Sierra. The Hornady's have been making entrance holes in the last few deer about tennis ball size or even bigger. I know for a fact the Sierra bullet in 87 gr. never did that even in my 250 Ackley Improved with its higher velocity. It shot beautiful today and probably would be my pick just like usual. The Zane Gray shot good and so did the big hammer 444. I ended up shooting the 444 more than usual just because my friend like to see it smack the stuff he sat up to shoot. Thirty rounds through it and my shoulder is feeling it right now. I think I will bruised from it.
Tomorrow will be a day to shoot the CZ 527 Varmint 223 in with the 60 gr. Hornady spire point that has been a proven deer killer in the past deer seasons. I will shoot the Savage BVSS-S 220 Swift Varmint in with the Nosler 60 gr. partition. I have killed two deer with that bullet and it did exactly what Nosler said it would. Through both shoulders and an exit hole the size of a quarter and DRT. Both of the Varmint models will only be used from an elevated deer tower 18' up. I have four tags but I will only use two and won't mind if I only use one.

Sounds like an armory to draw from. Good luck with the hunt.

Of those rifles, the 250 Savage would be my choice, too. That's a great old cartridge and so nice and accurate to shoot, all the more so in that Remington 700.

Yeah, I've done a fair amount of shooting with the 444. 30 rounds would have my shoulder sore, too.

A max hand load with the 265 gr or the 300 gr will definitely get your attention shooting from the bench. The 265 Hornady gummy tip loads have a pretty stout thump to the shoulder also. Heck, I used to shoot ground hogs with my 700 Remington 375 H&H magnum when I was a lot younger and for some weird reason I thought it was fun.  I doubt I would call it fun today. That 375 really was a very accurate rifle if you could take the beating and it shot many groups under an inch at a 100 yds with some being a ragged hole. I did chronograph a heavy hand load in it with a 300 gr Sierra spitzer bullet at just a few FPS under 2,700. That was not a fun load to shoot. The 300 H&H and 375 H&H magnum rifles I had in the 700 Rems. were both shooters.

You mentioned the .300 H&H. What a splendid round that is. My friend in Idaho has one in a Ruger No.1. A very accurate rifle, and I've shot it. Not much more recoil than a 30-06 really. A great old, but, very reliable round.
