Range Report: 15 meters with an air rifle
We have a terrible problem with rabbits this year and a lot of the neighbors are shooting them. One neighbor has this Gamo Big Cat 1400 and he said it needed sighting in. He was been killing rabbits all summer but he said he needed to aim about a foot high at 15 yards so I just sighted it in for him. Its now shooting an inch high at 15 meters. Not much of a target to post as I walked the adjustments up and slightly to the left. But here is my setup.

Interesting. Thanks for the photo. We have rabbits here but maybe not as bad as out there but this year, so far, they have let the beans and lettuce in the garden alone. I am not to discharge a gun in the borough here, as I used to use a .22 where I lived in the country up until 2012. Perhaps I could get away with an air rifle but I don't own one at the present.

Hey Sir H,
A foot low at 15yds sounds like the classic case of barrel droop; basically the norm with these break barrels.
Did you have to shim the scope? It's difficult to make that much of an adjustment with the turrets.
I was messing around with shims on my Umarex, before I found the Leapers/UTG droop compensating mount at pyramid. Should be standard issue for these break barrel guns. steady as a rock and gives you 10" of lift at 30 yrds.
BTW, here is our airgun range. We often layout cans in the grass as our "attacking zombies", sometimes sneaking up on the side LOL.

Dutch, I started with a bb pistol about 9 months ago. Then I bought another BB pistol, and finally a pellet rifle. My BIL's Crosman classic lives here and i picked up a Daisy Red Ryder.Deadwood Dutch wrote:I am not to discharge a gun in the borough here, as I used to use a .22 where I lived in the country up until 2012. I'm still using the scope that came on my $75 Umarex Surge (Walmart Online), through which I've fired about 2K rounds.
I did pay $20 for a better scope mount, but the scope is hanging in there though I have already picked out a replacement.
So on a $100 investment I've had untold hours of enjoyment using Crosman premium hps at $6.28 per 500.
There are so many good guns out there cheap. You can get the RWS 34 that bandit has been posting about for the price of an H001.
BTW, have you shot your H001 with primer only ammo? It's not much louder than a powerful airgun

Would it be a violation of forum rules to post a Hasenpfeffer recipe here?
On my rehab walk the other night I came up on a rabbit in a neighbor's yard. He just sat there about 10 to 15 ft from me. Should have brought my H001. I see the occasional wabbit in the yards around here, but we don't seem to have a lot of problems with them.

No I didn't have to shim the scope. But when I returned to shoot this afternoon I noticed the crosshairs weren't straight. I think there is something wrong with the scope.

When you say the crosshairs weren't straight, do you mean they no longer line up with vertical and horizontal? If so, the scope may have twisted in the mounts. This would likely be because the scope is not tight in the mounts.Sir Henry wrote:No I didn't have to shim the scope. Cheap air rifles are just like anything else, you get what you pay for. Spring powered air rifles are actually very sophisticated rifles. There is a big difference in a cheap air rifle vs a higher quality. Springs, seals, trigger compression tubes, tolerances etc. Most air rifle enthusiast start off with a cheap Big Box air rifle and eventually move up. The top of the line are the German Beeman/Weilrauch, *only the Beeman R series, the "English Air Arms" and the German Walther. Most of the owners of these rifles will take it a step further and place a after market spring or custom tuned by a profession tuner. These rifles average in cost about $500 to $800. A custom tune around $300.
Air gun enthusiast are a huge group of shooters. Bench rest, hunting etc. I have a number of very nice custom tuned rifles, However the Walther LGV is the nicest right out of the box. Dime size groups at 15 yds are just standard shooting. Extremely smooth, great trigger, and extremely quiet!.
Shoot a nicely tuned air rifle and you will be able to see a considerable difference.
Also consider the fact that ammo is so much less. $10-15 will get you around 500 quality pellets in eight 177. or 22.cal. I also have a backyard range, and shoot daily. You can most definitely acquire great shooting skills with these. I shoot mostly target, but will throughout the year take a good number of pest, like the squirrel, English Sparrow, and Grackles.
