Fun range day Saturday 6/15/19
Fun range day Saturday 6/15/19
I took my BBSC 357 and two pistols out to the range Saturday.
I shot 10 rounds of Monarch 158gr SJHP at 25 yards through the rifle while propped for a decent group.
Then I shot ten more rounds while standing. I was quite pleased to hit the bull six out of ten shots. Most of my rifle shooting has been while propped. I need more practice holding that rifle steady while shooting offhand. I’m not sure where that 10th round landed.
Then I put 50 rounds of Remington 115gr FMJ through my Ruger SR1911 Lightweight Commander 9mm. Here is one of the better groups. All shots were offhand at 7 yards. I’m not the best shot with a pistol but this was pretty good for me. This is my favorite pistol to shoot.
Finally, I shot 50 rounds of Monarch steel cased 94gr FMJ 380ACP through my Glock 42 offhand at 7 yards. As is typical of me, I shot low left.
Also, I had a failure to extract malfunction with the steel cased ammo.
I’ve shot 300 rounds of the steel cased 380 and had this type of malfunction maybe 3 or 4 times. I only bought the Russian junk because it was $8.50/box. I won’t be buying anymore steel ammo for any of my guns. Out of 1700 rounds, the only malfunctions I’ve had with my Glock 42 have been with this ammo.
All in all it was a fun, relaxing day at the range!

Glad you got out and did some fine shooting.
The problem I've encountered using steel cased ammo is that the extractor on various guns can have a hard time working its way over the case because of steel's hardness. Polishing the extractor claw surface can sometimes help. Not a problem with brass and also not a problem with the also very soft aluminum case stuff. The other problem with steel case ammo is inconsistent case diameters with some rounds being very tight to chamber. For cheap ammo, all my autos do very well with the aluminum case stuff, though.

thanks for the range report .... nicely done .... years ago I purchased some steel cased 357 ammo that proved to be poor quality .... inconsistent impact points at 25 or more yards .... some resisted being ejected from the cylinder of a GP100 .... haven't tried any since

Steel cased ammo should be relegated to guns commensurate with its quality.years ago I purchased some steel cased 357 ammo that proved to be poor quality ...
While originally designed as lower cost military ammo for semi and full auto firearms The mfgs. of it expanded into more commonly used calibers and unfortunately Its not uncommon to experience problems with it in higher quality guns that have better fit and tighter tolerances.
While the quality of SOME steel cased is better than others don't ever expect performance to ever be the same as brass cased ammo.

Nice shooting. I hope the range has dried out, we have had a couple days of heat and sunshine.
I'll check it out tomorrow.

Nice work! Haven't ever tried steel cased ammo, and, based on your experience, I guess I'll keep it that way!
