Single Shot 45-70

Saw one of these at the LGS the other day and it just looked perfect - even for a Henry. When the wife saw the look on my face as I checked it over, she pulled out a check, handed it to me, and said "oh, just go ahead and buy it". So another Henry came home with us. So today my son and I took it out to our homemade range to test it out with a box Winchester 300g JHP. The sun was out, but it was kind of cold and windy here in the valley, so we decided not to sight it in with a paper target and a gun-rest. We were just going to fire it off and hope the sights were close enough to hit something. He took the first shot at 25 yds - and hit the 3" bullseye on the steel swinger. Between the two of us, we probably put about 15 of the 20 rounds in that box on that black bullseye swinger. Some guns just seem to work right out of the box. This one is definitely a keeper.

Hey that is a nice .45-70 launcher! I have a single shot .45-70 also but it is an 1895 High Wall.
Looks like you got a good one right out the box as you say!

You can really have some fun when you start to load your own .45-70 rounds.

What was the other rifle and revolver you have there?

Nice piece of wood on that Henry. Love to hear how it groups when you get the chance, especially with that ammo. It's one of the more affordable factory ammo loads. Just picked up a TC Encore Katahdin 45-70 carbine.

Looks good Tad. I think its safe to say Tad has the Single Shot fever. Im really liking mine. I dont need another 45-70 as I have 2 in levers but that is a fun caliber to pound stuff with for sure. Make sure you give some of those Nosler 300 gr silver tips a shot if you reload. The Berrys plated 350's are good to for me anyway with about 16grs of Universal clays under them.

We a also have a Winchester High Wall in 45-70 - great rifle. That's a Ruger GP-100 357Mag under the Henry and a Springfield Armory M1A in the background. If you look close, you can also see a Browning BuckMark 22LR and Ruger MkIV 22LR behind the M1A. We were out plinking steel with some of the toys today...

Thanks for the info, Al - we'll give those Berry 350's a try. We really need to start reloading 45-70 because we can't stop shooting it and the factory stuff is pricey. We have all the equipment, just need to get started...By the way, the first thing I did with this rifle was put one of those Grainger springs in - worked like a champ - again. Best mod on the planet for Henry Single-Shot.

Congrats NCG - those Encore Katahdin's are really nice - we've been wanting to get our hands on one of those to check it out, but they are scarce around here. Thought you were cutting back on the big recoil stuff - those things can kick...

Well, I am cutting back on the big recoil stuff, EXCEPT when it comes to my Contenders and Encores. Just can't resist with those, given my very long history with the platform. That, and it's a lot easier to justify shooting the big stuff in a Contender and/or an Encore because you're only investing in another barrel, not a complete new gun. For the occasional outing with the hard kickers, I can justify that.

Big bore revolvers and hard kicking bolt guns are all gone, now, however. Biggest thing we shoot in a revolver is now a 357 and in bolt rifles, a 223.

Agree with NCG on the beautiful wood your Henry carries, Tad. Henry rarely fails in the "lumber" orders they bring in! And to have a rifle that also works well coming right OOTB is an extra plus. Glad the keeper started out so good for you and your son. Oh yes, lots of credit on your new rifle also goes to your wife. Good to have brought her along that day.

That's a nice one to find. The single shot 45-70's seem to be kinda scarce, from what I hear when folks are looking for them. It doesn't surprise me a bit that it's a shooter. Congrats!
