Remington 870P vs. Mossberg 590A1
Remington 870P vs. Mossberg 590A1
Hi all! I decided over this snowy and frigid weekend that it was a good time for a scattergun shoot-off between two heavyweight contenders in the defensive shotgun genre (yes, my timing could have been better!). I broke this one down into two parts. Part-1 is a comparison between the two shotguns in the shop, and Part-2 is the range review. I hope you enjoy it!

Re: Remington 870P vs. Mossberg 590A1
Nice video! I have the Rem. 870 Mag Express with AR type stock which helps absorb the slug recoil.
Also the 20 ga. Shockwave which is a great house gun.

Great videos Hrfunk. I watch a lot of these videos, and yours are right up there with any of them; always well done.
Three rounds off in a second, that kind of shocked me.
Keep them coming...........

Even though it was "one of those days," the tie between the two scatter guns was a good result.
Again, your videos with the split screen are excellent and easy to see all the action.
Wondering if you've made a video of shooting slugs long-distance? I'd like to see that. If you have, could you point me to it? I have very much enjoyed shooting 1-oz. slugs out of a smooth bore Benelli 12ga pump. Thanks.

No, I haven't done an exclusive slug video. That might be a good idea for the future! Stay tuned.PT7 wrote:Even though it was "one of those days," the tie between the two scatter guns was a good result.

If you do a slug shoot, you might want to pick up a box of Brenneke slugs in addition to the usual Foster style. I'd suggest the Green Lightning, or one of the LE slugs.Hrfunk wrote:No, I haven't done an exclusive slug video. That might be a good idea for the future! That is a good suggestion, Gunney. Brenneke slugs are top-of-the-line. Maybe Howard would also incorporate a comparison of the different type slugs, or whatever.GunnyGene wrote:If you do a slug shoot, you might want to pick up a box of Brenneke slugs in addition to the usual Foster style. I got interested in shooting slugs several years ago when I watched Hickok45 shoot Winchester 12ga 1-oz. slugs using a Benelli smoothbore shotgun. He shot at 230 yards.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNTyCcip-ks That motivated me to "compete" with him, although he never knew it. It was fun reaching out to that distance. I used basic Remington Fosters, 1-oz. slugs. Had some good & fun range time with my Benelli Nova tactical pump.

I started using Brenneke (Green Lightning) about 10 years ago in my old (1989) 590 Mariner. Don't plan to ever go back to Fosters. Like that potato chip challenge: Bet you can't eat just one.PT7 wrote:That is a good suggestion, Gunney. Brenneke slugs are top-of-the-line. I also have a shockwave and like it a lot. It's a good house gun, and a great little gun to carry around the farm in the Polaris Ranger UTV. That's the duty it signed on for. Mine is a 12g.
You can tell a lot about the character of a man...

I don't look back at the things I can no longer do, I just look forward to the things I still can.

Hmm. A long range slug video. That might have some promise! I've got several others in the works, but I might be able to get around to that at some point.PT7 wrote:That is a good suggestion, Gunney. Re: Remington 870P vs. Mossberg 590A1
Have you any experience with Brenneke? If not, be prepared for significantly more recoil, especially with any of the 3" magnums. They do have a reduced recoil slug for HD, but it sacrifices range to avoid over penetration. Still pretty potent in terms of wound cavity tho. There's a saying about Brenneke: "When you just have to make a beer can size hole completely thru anything." Somewhat of an exaggeration, but not totally off the mark.Hrfunk wrote:That might make an interesting comparison video. HR,
I've noticed in your productions you include some firearm history, as well as detailed descriptions of the firearms. If you try out and use Brenneke slugs, no matter what type of slug video you develop, here is a brief company history from the Brenneke web site. https://www.brennekeusa.com/company/history/ The old world production and high quality has hung in there for this German-based company over the years. Although higher-priced ammunition as Gunny noted, to me they are definitely worth it.
