.. firing from the back of a horse not conditioned to doing so usually brings on an almost instantaneous transition from a peaceful scene to an instant rodeo .... this it one of those, don't ask me how I know type of things ..

I could ride and shoot just like that by the time I was six or seven. The horse never minded the noise.
