Range Report: Homesteader on paper

I’m embarrassed to post this. In my own defense the sights were not intended for precision shooting. The peep is much too big and designed for quick acquisition of the target. The trigger is also much too big stiff. It is quiet even with 115 grain. I have some 140 grain but its not that much quieter and costs a lot more. The Henry recycled flawlessly.

Well, with piss poor sights and a lousy trigger that's not too bad. But, it sure isn't any insensitive to rush out and grab one.
Not that those are of any interest to me personally.

There’s five shots in the green that’s a good group. Then one in the green lower and five on paper. Those five green shots adjusted in would be a good group. You can’t make a silk purse our of a sows ear and that’s what i was trying to do. All ten rounds with proper zero would have gotten the job done in a home defense situation.

Of course a scope would help but that would delete the purpose of the Homesteader. Not sure what distance you were shooting at but the groups shown if centered would be more than sufficient for a self defense purpose.

Many moons ago I had one of the original Ruger PC-9’s. I put a red dot on it but never fell in love with it for the same reason. Just couldn’t get it to shoot to the level I wanted. (I was more of a group snob back then). So it went down the road.

A while back I was at a short fall of scopes for my lever guns. Griffin Armament ran a 40% off sale on their optics. For the price of on vpo, I got two 3x prism sights with the ACSS reticle.


Those things are handy as all get out. I put one on my Henry 357, and one on a Smith 44 mag.

It's just enough magnification for me to easily group on a 2- to 3-inch sticky at 100.
Obviously, the sale isn't going on right now, but. This is the sight, and I run them on the lowest pic-rail mount.

Guns don't have to drive tacks for me, but they do have to shoot centered groups for me. I have sent really nice guns to live elsewhere because I couldn't shoot them well. WE didn't fit, sights didn't work (for me) or the fixer grips didn't fit my hands so the gun wouldn't point naturally for me.

I rarely keep a gun that I can't get to shoot.
