Range Report: Winchester 68

This is a fun little plinker to shoot offhand. I was shooting at a six inch gong at 35 yards and only missed a couple times. It’s fun to get into a rhythm of loading, cocking and shooting. Being a single shot it took me about an hour to shoot a 50 round box of CCI SV.

That is such a classic. I'm hoping to find one for my backyard plinking to go along with my Model 67, the open sight version.

I really like the rear peep. It’s small enough to see sharper. I hear you can also remove the peep and hunt better with a wider field of view.

Perfect pace for us retired folks. Even when shooting a magazine fed firearm I always limit my mag loads to force me to stop and reload very often.

When I was using our old Remington 550-1 autoloader for backyard plinking on spinners the other day, I loaded it up with CB 22 Shorts (it holds 21 Shorts). I wasn't thinking about how fast I was burning up ammo until I heard the click of the trigger on an empty chamber. Wasn't shooting that fast, either. At the rate I was shooting, I could have used up a 50 rounds box of Shorts in maybe 10 or 15 minutes, easy.

I’ve noticed a big difference between levers/bolts and semiautomatics. I like shooting shorts in my Mare’s Legs because with them I can load more in the shorter mag tube.
