357 Magnums at the Range

Went to the range today to burn-up some of the 357 Magnum ammo I had on the shelf. Took along the Henry BBS, Rossi R92 and Cimarron Pistolero. Turned out it was a little warm today at 90 F. Set up my steel rack at about 45 yards for the rifles and a paper target at 15 yards for the pistol.

Had a lot of fun making the steel jump and swing around and also punch some holes in the paper. Below are the implements for having fun.

Since this was a hotter load than I've been using, I decided to see how it grouped. So I moved the paper target to 45 yards and fired 5 shots from the Henry and 5 from the Rossi. Both of these rifles were zeroed with a lighter charge of Universal. I bumped this charge up by 0.4 gr. to see the results. As I expected both rifles shot lower, but grouped well. I also noticed this when I was shooting the steel as I missed the first few times until I started aiming at the tops of the steel.

The 5 shots from the Rossi, circled in white, produced a great group. The Henry group, circled in pink, was not as impressive. The big problem with the Henry is the front bead is too large and completely covered the black area while aiming. The front post on the Rossi is rather thin and is easy to place in the black area center. So with the Henry I couldn't see any side to side or up and down wobble. But what the heck, shooting is all about having fun and doing what you enjoy.

Finding the same issues with irons. The plan next range trip is to finally listen to BrokenolMarine and zero to a 6 O’Clock hold.

We are shooting at the B27 target from 50 yards with the 6" PPC 38 revolver here. I finally tightened up my groups in all four positions by changing MY point of aim during a practice session and shooting at the neck and setting the sights for the #4 position on the four position rear sight to put rounds into the X-ring with this hold.

Look at the target from this distance. Floating the head RIGHT on the tip of the front sight means my sight is aligned left to right and vertically. With the width of the front sight at this distance trying to hold the front sight in the center of the body... ... I could never maintain a good sight picture.

The excellent sights on the guns let me choose one of four sight settings, so I had one for 7, 15, 25 and 50 yards. The real error was NOT checking to insure the rear sight was set on the proper sight for the distance we were shooting on. You only make that mistake once, or twice.

With the Henry sight, try floating the ball, use a six o'clock hold on the black to keep your point of aim consistent and see if your groups don't tighten up considerably. I also went with the Skinner Peep for my rear sight. Old Eyes these days. I believe they offer a different front sight as well.

This is very hard for me to do. I have to agree with "BrokenolMarine" the 6:00 Hold worked very well for me when I went to "Boot" (Jul '62), and is still my first choice when working with Iron. I am even considering using a rear peep sight on my Glock 21 while using the 6:00 . . .
