Ruger Precision Rfle .22Magnum

Post by GunnyGene » Mon Dec 06, 2021 7:56 pm

I bought this rifle about 2 months ago. Added a decent scope (3-9x40 Zero Tech) and a bipod. Then spent a few weekends getting everything (and me) sorted out and comfortable with each other and sighted it in yesterday. I know y'all like pitchers so here's the rifle, and the range report. :)

Set up a bullseye at 50yds shooting Hornady 30grn V-Max.

Ballistics work up for this gun and ammo. Looks good out to about 160yds before it drops into the sonic transition zone and gets squirrely.

Final zero verification, shooting from inside my shop off the table saw. You can only count 8 holes, but trust me there were 10 rnds went thru that bull. The slight vertical spread is due to about 65 heartbeats/minute. Red bull is 1.5" dia.

Nice job Gene. I will probably get crucified for this comment but oh well to each their own. I like the 22 mag and I think it still out does the 17 HMR in one big respect. Wind. Come to Colorado and Wyoming and shoot a 17 on most days. The wind plays he!! with that 17 grain bullet

Don't worry about getting older and still doing stupid stuff. You'll do the stupid stuff as always, only much slower. Hold my beer and watch this.......

Don't know if you are familiar with the RPR models, but Ruger did a fine job on these. Very well made. One of the high points is the easily adjustable trigger from 2.25 to 5lbs without any disassembly. Just the provided allen wrench that's stored in a small compartment aft of the bolt. Take down is simple also, and a dot of grease on the sear really slicks things up. I might buy a centerfire model next year. :)

Never shot a .17hmr. Just didn't appeal to me.

A few years ago I had the low end version, the Ruger American 22 wmr. It was surprisingly accurate and man did it smack ground squirrels. When shooting the LR from time to time I would lose a hit one down the hole. Never happened with the WMR. I had the Vortex Diamondback 3-9x40 rimfire on it and that was a very deadly combination. That adjustable trigger would have been a bonus on the American.

Edit: I just recalled that the American does have an adjustable trigger which I took advantage of. CRS baby!

One other thing: About this budget scope ($200). Nothing fancy about it, just your basic reticle, but has excellent glass and holds zero. Turrets can be reset to 0 easily with a quarter to remove the turret screw. I keep one under the cap. :)
