Friday at the range

Post by bandit1250 » Sun Sep 25, 2016 12:13 pm

I took six rifles to the range Friday to do some shooting. Weather was hot but the wind was light to moderate so I spent some time there and was nice to have the range to my self. First I shot my 223 Axis and then my Tikka 223. I shot one four shot group with each at a 100 yds. then left them sit and cool while I shot the rim fires. I had my Marlin 39A I hunt with and my Ruger 22 Mag. I got this past spring and my CZ FS 17 HMR which I don't really like much. Just not fond of the HMR 17. This is the target from the Axis and the Tikka. I had to use tape for targets as the cross hairs covered the circles I made. All were four shot groups but one on the right for the Tikka is three because I dropped a round on the concrete and damaged the tip on the bullet bad. One target is the last two rounds in a box of Blazers I just shot with the 39A to use them up at the 100 yd. target I held on the tape at the top and it hit at the lower target.

The next target is the 39A with a few brands of ammo at 50 yds. The left bottom is 6 shots and the right is 9. This old Marlin does pretty good with the Blazers.(1951 39A) The center tape target is one I would maybe be unable to duplicate with this rife/scope combo. This is 5 shots with my cheapest CZ(513 Basic) and a 4X Leupold with Norma Tac at 50 yds. It may get a 2-7 Rim fire scope put back on it before squirrel season. Far right was shot just killing time with my 39A and is two tubes of 17 rounds each and is at 50 yds. and is about squirrel head accurate. I shot these fairly fast but from a sand bag rest.

Now to the rim fire magnums. The Ruger 22 Mag. has been great since day one for accuracy. The rotary mag sucks. I have to use my truck key to pop the loaded rounds from the mag and it is still not easy. I can't figure all the hype about Rugers great rotary mags. The CZ's mags feed flawless and easy to unload. Top target was the Ruger with 30 V-Max. Far right was rifle resting on the bags just ahead of the magazine well and the two left were resting on the fore end. This day every rifle shot the best resting at the mag well and the 39A resting where the fore arm meets the action. The bottom is the CZ 17 HMR. Left was resting forward of the mag well and right was on the fore end.

22 Mag targets covered with a dime with some edges of the holes visible. Still is on of my better shooting 22 mags I have had.

Looks like a lot of fun. I need to try out a 22 mag one of these days.

Another great range report, Bandit. As usual, you continue to set the bar. Thanks.

Nice shooting! Must be a 'blast' to take six rifles to the range!
