Anybody chronographed the Remington or other 180gr SP loads in the Henry 44 Mag?
I just bought 3 boxes of Remington 44 Mag 180gr SP ammo from walmart that was marked down to $19/box. I figured what the heck it was marked down half price even though I reload my own ammo.
Just wondering if anybody ran these loads through a chronograph in their Henry rifle or maybe some other 180gr loads. I've seen some data that may have been clocked at around 2100fps.
I usually load Nosler 240gr JHP or Hornady 240gr XTP bullets in my 44 loads and have clocked them at around 1750fps using H110 or W296.

Remington 180 gr JSP clock in at around 2060 FPS out of my Henry Big Boy Brass.
Compare to Federal American Eagle 240 gr JHP at around 1680 FPS.
In my Henry I normally shoot 240 gr bullets. The POI with the 180's @50 yds is much higher. Like 6"-8"+!

Why? I've spoken about this several times in the past. My rifle just isn't fond of 180's. But with any rifle the heavier bullets will drop more. Mine is just a bit more finicky than most.JEBar wrote:Squatch wrote:In my Henry I normally shoot 240 gr bullets. The POI with the 180's @50 yds is much higher. Like 6"-8"+!

my surprise is what appears to be such a large difference (of 6 - 8") at 50 yards

I was too originally. But I learned to feed it what it likes to eat!

You should have been at the range when Squatch first tried out his BB. My BB was dead on and Squatch couldn't hit paper with his using the same ammo (I think it was PMC 180 grain hollow points). I ended up spotting for him and noticed that he was hitting the top of the wood target frame. He had to aim at the bottom of the frame to get the rounds near the center of the target. Even then, everything was way to the left. He actually sent the rifle back to Henry and they didn't find anything wrong with it and told him that it was dead on at 50 yds with 240 grain rounds. So he has been using 240 grain rounds ever since. My BB doesn't seem so picky and I usually use 180 grain ammo. Maybe our rifles have different twists?JEBar wrote:my surprise is what appears to be such a large difference (of 6 - 8") at 50 yards

that is interesting .... over time I've owned rifles that liked some ammo better than others but never anywhere near that extreme .... I know that barrel twist can make a major difference in the weight of bullets that it can stabilize the best .... did you try your Henry with 180's .... if so, how did they performHack wrote:You should have been at the range when Squatch first tried out his BB. My BB works just fine with the 180s. If fact, my BB is not very sensitive to the ammo. I mainly shoot 180 grain magnums, 180 grain specials and 200 grain cowboy loads. At 50 ydrs there is not much difference among them, maybe an inch or two in the center of the group. That is why Squatch and I were stumped and thought that there was something wrong with his BB until he got the report back from Henry. We ended up swapping my 240s for his 180s. All we know is his rifle is very accurate so long as he uses 240s, which is what he does now that he knows what it likes.

interesting, can't think of anything that might explain it ..... we haven't tried any 180's in our Henry 44, have fired 240's and they work wellHack wrote:My BB works just fine with the 180s.
