Hello from Loveland, Ohio

Post by goldenpony » Sun Jul 03, 2016 8:13 pm

Just became the proud owner of a new in box (never fired) H001 rifle. I have 2 other .22 rifles, a Ruger 10/22 and a Marlin 60. I like both of these rifles a lot, but I kind of think my new Henry will become my favorite, as I have always loved lever guns. As a kid, one of my favorite TV shows was The Rifleman.

I am a member of a gun club, and one of my very favorite things there is bowling pin shooting. They have these once a month. They also have Cowboy Action pin shoots. I plan to try my new Henry on the pins.

I am 70 years young, and retired after 33 years working for GE Aircraft Engines here in Cincinnati. I am married to a cool lady 17 years my junior. I have two grown kids and 3 grandsons.

My favorite things, next to my wife, are shooting, riding my motorcycle and driving my yellow Mustang convertible. I refuse to grow up, LOL.

Hello all! :)

Glad to meet such a young-at-heart 70-year old!! :)
Welcome to the Forums from the Show-Me-State.

Yes, you will enjoy that new Henry. Look forward to your first Range Report.

And couple of questions on the bowling pins shoot. At what distance will you shoot against the pins? It almost seems that the .22 caliber might not be strong enough to knock 'em over -- does it handle the pins okay?

My knee-jerk thinking is that it will be both fun, and a challenge, too, using a .22 rifle.

Welcome from Pennsylvania! I have found the H001 Clasic Lever Action to be a superb rifle that handles any .22lr ammo. And it's purty too. :D

Just ordered a nice orange Henry soft case. I figured a classic rifle deserves a good looking case.

Pin shooting is a blast. The pins are on a metal table (5 pins) 25 feet away. You have 20 seconds to clear the table. All pins must be off the table. If even 1 pin is still on the table, even if knocked over, your score is 20. There are guys that can clear the table in under 5 seconds.
A .22 rifle will easily knock a pin off the table if you hit the pin in the right place. .22 pistols shoot at pin tops, about the top 5 inches of the pin that has been cut off. Some people use pistols up to 50 cal. I sometimes shoot my Ruger 1911. The last part of the day, the shot guns come out. I like to use my Saiga 12 here. I have even seen guys shooting black powder pistols. Shooting the pins is a humbling experience for me. I am not too bad, considering I have not done it a whole lot, but some of the older guys that have been doing it for years are really good, but I have fun and that's what it's all about.

That competition does sound like a fun time, and that's the bottom good line....thanks. Also knowing the distance is 7 yards lends itself to the .22s doing the job okay.

One final question, and I marked your comment below. What firearm do they use and are able to clear the table in < 5 seconds? Again I'd think a lever-action rifle would have to be really pushed to do that. Possibly they use semi-autos?

And thanks for the chats!

Yes, the ones that get times like that are shooting semi autos. The guys with the semi auto shot guns are stupid fast, 3 seconds and change.
I took my new (new to me) Henry pin shooting this morning and I am absolutely in love. I have 2 other .22s, a Ruger 10/22 and a Marlin 60. I like both guns, but my Henry is now my favorite. Not as fast clearing the table as the semis, but it really does the job. I believe it is more accurate than the Ruger or the Marlin. I didn't even have to "sight it in", just shot it out of the box .

Welcome from Indiana and congrats on your new Henry.

One of my best friends worked for GE Aircraft Engines in Cincinnatti. He just left there a couple of years ago after 20+ years to go with another company.
