Good morning, I'm new to the forum and a new Henry Rifle owner. I bought a Single shot mod and gave it to myself for Christmas. I have been hunting deer for close to 50 yrs now and can not remember the last time It was necessary to take a follow up shot at a deer. That statement says more about my patience than it does about my shooting skills. I love hunting with my muzzle loader and have learned that one well placed shot will always get the job done. It is my opinion that the Henry Single shot is the best of the single shot rifles available. I am setting it up now to shoot at the range in the spring. I plan to carry it next fall during the NH firearms season.

You've said a lot about the Henry single-shot and hunting in your intro post. When I first became interested in firearms and hunting, I had both gun safety & hunting training. I learned (and always remember) that the first shot is the most important, especially to humanely harvest on your hunt. And patience during the hunt is a class in and of itself.

I chose the 308 win.. I already owned 2 Brownings and a Ruger Hawkeye in 308 and have taken many deer with the caliber.

for my money, 308 is a top notch choice .... back in 1970 I bought a Belgium made Browning BLR 308 .... for 20 some years (the time period when I hunted the most) it was my only big game rifle .... with several other big game rifles in the vault, for most of 30 more years, it was the rifle I hunted with .... I've taken more black bear, boar, deer and elk with it than all of our other rifles combined .... do you load your own ammo .. .. if so, I'd be interesting to hearing what you choose for your new Henry

I haven't shot it yet. I shoot 165 grain hornady Interlocks for hunting. My pet load for my Browning A-Bolt II Boss rifle uses 39.grains of IMR 3031 with the 165's. On some days It will shoot a ragged hole at 100 yrds. My first "do all" bolt action rifle was a 243 win. I never missed a deer with that rifle. I don't know how many deer I shot with that rifle but the last deer I shot I put four well placed shots on it. One quartering in shot in the pocket and three broadside shots as it was trotting down through the woods. No pass throughs. The first shot planted it it but it jumped up and started running. The first shot would have been enough but, well you know, how it goes. When I skun that deer I couldn't get over where I was finding pieces of the bullets. Slow things down to moderate velocities with a good bonded bullet and I get real nice pass throughs. No more deflections off rib bones. I would never argue that the 243 win isn't a good deer caliber, because like I said I shot a chit load of deer with mine. I stay away from the shoulders, but still had a broadside shot that deflected and broke the spine. When I decided to buy the Henry Single Shot, the caliber choice was a no brainer for me.

our long time load for our BLR uses 47 g of IMR 4320 pushing 150 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips has proven to be very versatile .... it serves as an extremely accurate range round and performs really well on white tails .... for boar and bear we use the same charge pushing 150 g Nosler Accubond bullets .... historically for deeper penetration we use the same load with Nolser 150 g Partitions .... Nosler has come out with E-tips that I'd someday really enjoy loading for even deeper penetration

It's all about the penetration !!

Welcome from Colorado. 308 is one of my favorites along with 243. I have a 357 Single shot and am looking at getting another as I really like the SS.

Good evening BigAl52, Thank you for the welcome. I posted a call for help on the single shot rifle discussion page. I tried to buy the Grainger spring to make the modification on my 308. They said the part # was not available anymore. I took the small spring out and it helped but i'm guessing I'd be better off with the recommended fix. Word on the street is you may know where I can buy one. HELP !!

What part number did you give them?
