I'm looking into see what people have to say about the Henry H001 and what they think about them and how they shoot. I have a 12 year old grandson that has been shooting for some time. It is time to get him one of his own. I'm thinking a Henry H001 would be a good rifle to start out with. He is big enough to handle a full size stock now. We are looking to get him into hunter safety class to be able to go deer hunting this year. He'll be shooting a lever action rifle in a 30-30 if he hunts. We may be surprising him with a second rifle in a 30-30. I have been shooting for quite awhile. I'm also a NRA certificated instructor for conceal carry for 12 years. I'm even looking to purchase one for myself so we can shoot together on the same level. His dad my even also.Thank you for letting in your group.

Welcome to the forum snaredog! I'm in the Tualatin Valley Oregon. I don't have a H001, but I do have the H009B .30-30. Best rifle I've owned! Others who have the H001 will likely be along shortly to share what they think and how they shoot.

Welcome Snaredog. I dont have a 001. But I do have a small game carbine and 2 of the H-001T's. That H-001 is a very popular 22 and I think you would like it alot. For yourself take a serious look at the SGC. I think its the best levergun 22 on the market.

Welcome to the forum from CT, snaredog. That twelve year old is going to love his H001. The action is smooth and the rifle is just plain fun to shoot! It will shoot any brand of ammo you can feed -- without a hitch -- and hit the target. I love mine.

+1 for BigAl's endorsement of the Small Game Carbine in 22. Fantastic rifle. And the good ol' H001 has sold over a million copies, so your grandson will be just fine with it, too!
Depending on where you'll be hunting, consider the 357 Big Boy Steel for him, too. Great for deer under 75 yds and easy/fun to shoot (not to mention cheaper to shoot/practice with!). Lots to choose from.

Welcome from the Show-Me-State, Snaredog! I've owned two H001 Henry models, the H001M in .22 magnum, and my current H001TLP, the SGC in .22LR. Also shot my son's-in-law H001 for about a year, which is the one you plan for your grandson. That will be a great choice! All three of my H001s shot excellently, easy to handle, and smooth-as-butter lever actions. My favorite by far has been the SGC.
I wouldn't hesitate at all getting the H001 as his first Henry. You've got my simple "go-ahead!"

I would say the H001 is a perfect choice for your grandson's first rifle. It is light, accurate ...... and the slick lever action will put a smile on anybody's face (young or old! )

I have a H001 that I've had for years, used it to teach the youngest two to shoot with.
That grandson of yours will love it.
Never had an issues with mine and it shoots whatever I feed it.
