Hi, I'm over here in England and the proud owner of a Henry H010 45/70 rifle. I'm lucky enough to have the Henry on one of our
compulsory Firearms Licences for hunting deer and wild boar.
I'm having difficulty developing a good hunting load so intend to post some inquiries in the reloading section of the forum.
Looking forward to hearing from some of you guys soon.

Yes, I can see why you're "the proud owner of a Henry H010 45/70 rifle." Last spring my son-in-law bought the new H010CC model of the .45-70. I got to "show it off" in a mini photo shoot I posted in May http://henryrifleforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2787, and then had the chance to shoot it later in the summer. It is a sharp-looking rifle with a butter-smooth action...and very accurate. I'd recommend it just from my one-time shooting experience.

Hi, thanks for the welcome. The only bullets which are readily available for hunting (we have to use soft/hollow point expanding
heads for hunting) are Sierra 300gn HPFN (8900) and they are $45 for a box of 50.
I will be posting a query in the reloading section when I get the time, so any feedback from yourself would be appreciated.

Sierra makes a good bullet .... I know next to nothing (or even less) about the laws/restrictions across the pond .... are you able to order other brands that offer "soft/hollow point expanding head" bullets for hand loading

I can try to order other makes but most of the time they aren't available, and if they are, they cost more than the Sierras.
There are very few of us who use 45/70 for hunting so it's not worth the importers carrying that type of head in stock. When I worked in our local Firearms Licencing dept., the second largest in the UK, I never saw another 45/70 authorized for hunting.
I cast my own target and plinking heads, Lee 410gn RNFP, and get some excellent groups with them so I'm happy to stick with the Sierras for the limited
hunting I'm likely to do.

info appreciated .... what brands of powder do you have access to .... for your info ===> our preferred hunting level load for a 300 grain bullet is 51.5 grains of IMR 4198

Surprisingly we have quite a choice of powders, when they are available. The supply of US powders is very patchy. You buy it when it appears on the shelf. I was quoted last week for a tin Re7 $69.00. Most of the American powders are near that price now. It's very annoying when I see you can buy it from Brownells for $27.00.
There are some French, East European and Swiss powders coming onto the market but there is very little data for 45/70.
Thanks for the heads up on IMR 4198 I was thinking of trying to find a tub to try. Is it difficult to ignite? I have had problems with Re7. Some of my initial test loads using CCI 200 either didn't ignite the 45gn charge or left vast quantities of unburnt powder.(I use a heavy Lee factory crimp on all my loads) The only primer which seems to give good burn, and constant velocities over the chrono is the Federal 215 Magnum Match.

Federal primers work well ... I've used CCI Large Rifle Primers (200) for decades .... no problem with unburnt powder nor with significant variations in muzzle velocity
