Hello from the UK!

Hello everybody. My name is Les, as you may have guessed from my username! I'm currently living in Runcorn, UK, but I have spent a lot of time in South Africa and a few other places in between.

I'm currently waiting for my firearms certificate to come back so I can go and collect my new Henry .22 Pump Action rifle. Here in the UK, we have to apply for each new acquisition to be added to our certificates, unless we already have a vacant "slot" available. A couple of weeks ago, I bought a Marlin - advertised as a 39A, but it turned out to be a 39D - and it was a real lemon; not the kind you can make lemonade out of, either, although it might well have been.

Anyway, that got traded in after 10 days of frustration for my new Henry. I initially wanted a .22 Golden Boy, but after reading a lot of posts on Rimfire Central about the low comb height not being suitable for a scope, I went with the pump action. The Frontier came as a very close 2nd choice, but perhaps I can add one at a later date, as I really like the Henry lever action rifles.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to meeting you all, and while I'm waiting for my new rifle I'll read as many posts here as I can here to fill my tiny little brain with as much info as possible about Henry Rifles! :D

Thank you all for your warm welcomes - I feel like a part of the Henry 'Family' already. :D

.22 ammunition is still freely available in the UK at the moment, although the price has increased slightly recently because of changing political scenarios and currency fluctuations etc.

We are allowed an ammunition 'limit' on our firearms certificates for each caliber that we own. We can ask for a certain amount to be allocated, but each individual will only be granted so much by their local police department, and it is a bit of a lottery as to how much you'll get. At the moment, I am allowed 2000 rounds of .22lr, which is actually around the top end of the scale. When I hear of folks in the USA buying 10k at a time (when it's available), I have to smile and think "If only!", but I'm a lot luckier than a lot of other people so I am certainly not complaining.

There is currently about a 4 week delay in applications for changes to firearms certificates from my police force. Some areas are a lot faster, and some are much longer, sometimes stretching to many months, so once again I just tick the days off and hope that today will be the day! (it wasn't!! ).

Totally new applications from people who are applying for a certificate for the first time often take several months because of background checks and contacting references etc, but again some areas are much faster - or slower - than others. We have to apply for each caliber that we want. Sometimes you can get lucky, and get everything you've asked for, and other times you won't, but that's all part of the fun. ;)

I'm glad you're part of this Henry "family", Les. It helps for us to understand how other countries regulate firearms and ammunition.

In my state of CT, if one is licensed, he can purchase as many rounds at a time as he likes. But, given the demand for .22LR ammunition, most sales outlets here restrict the quantity to a relatively small number of purchases per day. In most cases, that restriction makes absolutely no sense. For example, Walmart, a national retailer that sells ammunition in CT (they also sell firearms in other states, but not here), limits purchases of 22LR to three boxes per day. The quantity of rounds in the box is irrelevant. It can mean three boxes of 50 rounds each or three boxes of a 1000 rounds each. The limitation is by the box.

It's a silly world with silly rules. Thanks for letting us know of yours.

I support Liverpool. Sometimes I think I must have done something really bad in a past life, and this is my punishment.

They always look good before the referee blows the whistle to start the game, but once he does everything seems to go pear shaped. They are - or were - one of the top sides in the UK, and under their new manager they are showing signs of a return to form. I may be even older and grayer before I see it, though!
