New Henry Big Boy .44 mag owner

Post by fergy » Thu Nov 11, 2021 6:28 pm

Howdy members. I'm new to the forum, new to Henry ownership and other than that, an old coot.
I wanted a Henry pretty much since I was a kid. I finally bought mine and it is amazing. Proud to have an all American rifle.

I missed out hunting with it last year receiving it just after deer season ended. Opening weekend last Saturday I fired my first shot at an animal with my new Henry. Turned out to be the biggest buck I've ever shot in 45 years of hunting. Apparently, I should have bought it years ago! :)

Thanks all. Yes this gun is a shooter. So fun and easy to shoot. I had a Rossi but it was a project to get it performing with just open sights. I shot quite a few deer with it but, it wasn't the gun I wanted and it wasn't as fun. I used handloads with the Rossi, a load I worked up that grouped the tightest using HP38 and Hornady XTP soft points. I still have maybe 80 rounds of such but when I went out to the range with the Henry, it much preferred the Remington 240 HTP soft points for grouping. I also shot some Win white box 240 soft points which I had laying around. One of these days I'll probably do another range of loads and go shoot them to see what groupings i can get with each powder load, but for now, the Rem HTP's are killing animals. (shot a pretty good hog this weekend)
I sold the Rossi and a couple other guns to buy the Henry and made about double what I expected, so I also bought a Leupold VX 3i 3.5-10 scope with the money. And had a few hundie to give the wifey for her play money. The scope is really fine and brighter than anything I've ever had. In fact, I saw this buck with only about 2 minutes of legal shooting time left and assumed he was a young buck I had seen all around me that evening, but when I put up the scope and looked at him, I pulled back the hammer and aimed and shot. I knew he was a decent buck but once I walked over to him, and saw how big he was, I just looked up to the sky and thanked my Maker! I also thanked God that the buck only jumped a few yards and was laying right in my quad runner trail. :D If I'd had to drag him very far, I'd still be out there I think.
Here's a pic of the Henry and the Buck
